Today we're in County Tipperary, Ireland, tackling a hike that combines history, breathtaking views, and a little bit of leg burn (in the best way possible). We're hitting the Millennium Cross trail, then bagging the peak of Tountinna, the highest point in the Arra Mountains!
We're starting things off at the Graves of the Leinstermen, a fascinating megalithic tomb marking an ancient burial site.
The exact purpose and history of the Graves of the Leinstermen are shrouded in mystery, but there are two main theories:
- Megalithic Tomb: The most widely accepted theory is that the Graves of the Leinstermen is a megalithic tomb, a type of prehistoric burial site common in Ireland and Europe. These tombs typically date back to the Neolithic or Bronze Age (4,500 to 2,500 BC).
- Folklore Connection: Local folklore links the site to a story from medieval Irish literature, the "Cogadh Gael re Gabháll" (The War of the Gaels with the Foreigners). The story describes a skirmish between King Brian Boru and Leinstermen who were visiting him. While the historical accuracy of this connection is debatable, it adds a layer of intrigue to the site.
Millennium Milestone: First up, the Millennium Cross. This isn't your average roadside cross. This beauty stands tall on Laghtea Hill, marking the spot where a previous cross, built in 1932 for a Eucharistic Congress, was struck by lightning! Talk about a powerful symbol. Legend has it that St. Patrick himself even rested here on his travels!
Climbing Tountinna: After soaking (pun intended) in the views from the Millennium Cross, we'll conquer Tountinna. At 459 meters, it's not Everest, but the climb will definitely get your heart pumping and the reward is EPIC. From the summit, we'll have panoramic views of the majestic Lough Derg, the River Shannon (one of the longest rivers in Ireland!), and the rolling green hills of Tipperary.
Emerald Isle Magic: This hike is a must for any adventurer in Ireland. It's got a bit of everything - history, stunning scenery, and a good dose of exercise. So lace up your boots, pack some snacks, and get ready for some serious Irish magic!
