Hi I’m a contractor shopping for a welder. total beginner. Loving your channel super helpful and informative/demonstrative. Set myself on fire when I was 13 with a farm auction welder and zero internet or people to teach me lol. Scared the crap outa me never tried it since; but I have been living with this need to cut metal and weld it together time to let it out! Any way thanks for the vids dude

I bought a new Miller Thunderbolt in 1980 and I have hard faced farm equipment, built farm implements, built bumpers and hitches and just run the guts out of it until I got my first SA 200 pipeliner and then I have had 2 different Miller Bobcats since with the last one I bought new in 2006 and I run a Lincoln LN 25 suitcase on my bobcat. I only ever overheated that thunderbolt one time while hardfacing a backhoe bucket running 5/32 rod hot, it was a good old machine and I still have it in a shed at my farm. I’m currently working on getting me a Miller 220 for my retirement machine.

In 30 more years, the new Miller will have needed a circuit board and various other sensitive electronics replaced and the old transformer welder will still be going strong.

I understand that Miller is going to be totally out of the transformer type welder business within the next couple years, if not sooner! We had several Miller inverters in the rail area shop I worked in, 304XMT & 350XMT, 460 volt input, and after the warranty ran out every one of them cooked a pc board or two! Cost to repair: $1200 to $1400! And that’s nearly half the cost of the machine! Input power was spot on! I know of a local industrial piping contractor that tried several of these new t-bolts, and they all went back to the welding supply dealer because they couldn’t keep any of them running! They aren’t a very good purchase, but they are easy to steal………. And use as a boat anchor!

I sold my old Thunderbolt 225 this spring, ( sold same day I put it up for sale got, $275 for it ) People still want the old beast. I think mine was 1985, the front face slightly different. Good machine but it kept blowing my 240v circuit when I went over 150 amps, a pain at times. I had a 40 amp breaker which was not enough. I stepped up a bit with my new machine ( Fronius 180) because it has pulse stick , does 6010/6011 as well and weighs about the same as the new Miller and draws max 24 amps at full draw. No more tripped breaker. The old 225 Thunderbolt still is a good solid machine , looks like the new Thunderbolt 160 is going to work well and the price is really good, beats all those imports from China for very little more $$$.

From the vid (from the sound also), the old one seems to have a more stable, smoother arc... The new one, seemed to struggle a bit (on the first try) with 6010. Well nothing new here since inverters seem to have more problems with 6010 (although some might be optimized for 6010; at least they sometime have a 6010 fonction). BTW, one more difference: the transformer welders can outlive their owners. Inverters? Hum, we will see...

U don’t need to modify anything just buy a tig tourch and switch your leads, 90% of the time on jobs they still have ancient Lincoln’s without the fancy options, they can be nice but I spend most my time using machines that don’t have them that I don’t turn them on even if I do. Like the old one better. I got one of these chinese clone units 230 amps and bought the stinger etc.. all for 120 bucks.. these units are for desk space install.. i banged my unit up welding etc.. tested it in the truck sliding around. Week later it died. The solder connectors on motherboard will break.. not meant for working in the field.. welding shop table setup and leave it..not sayin its not better just not as durable these old non circuitboard models.

I love what bakers gas does for welders'. I love Miller welders. I have/had 4 as an advanced hobbyist DIY guy. Unfortunately Miller is out of touch with reality these days and if i understand correctly basically a Chinese company. This Chinese made Miller welder is 3 times the cost of an equally or more capable Chinese welder. It's better quality, but at this level there is no reason i see to buy it. They couldn't even include a digital display?? for $500 bucks i get less output, no display, better cables and questionable 6010 capabilities (the arc went out 3 times). I am frustrated since I am in the market for one of these machines and i can't find a proper unit for a fair price. Don't get me started on the more advanced miller units. I could never afford to replace my dynasty if it dies and I'm not sending $4K to China.

Nice review, but sounds like you're prolly getting paid by Miller. It's funny, but after watching a ton o Chucky2009 vids, I realize that most of these vids are paid advertisements. After he stopped doing paid ads, and actually came out and told us, the viewers this, I developed even more respect for him. That aside, you never mention the duty cycle difference between the old Miller and the new miller, I'm sure it's a substantial difference worth mentioning? Also, Chuckie makes note that Miller & Hobart, (same company?), have sold out their name (for their lower priced units), in favor of slapping their name, on Chinese units. People see the blue Miller box, and think, 'higher quality' when in fact much of these may have Chinese components, that would never last as long as your older, American made Miller stick welder. I'd love to see you open the boxes up on the two units, and talk about the real differences. Chucky also makes mention that the fact that you have to put the leads together, is a sure sign of Chinese made... Thoughts?

@jdbabs we are an authorized Miller Electric distributor. We are not paid for making the videos. We put them together to provide unique content for our customers. We often answer questions we are frequently asked or try to highlight what we like / don't like / what is included /what isn't ect. about a particular machine or product that people might not know by simply looking at a spec sheet or image. We hope that our videos are informative and the viewers consider shopping with us. Putting the leads together yes is inconvenient but this welder is very affordable. Many machines / components of machines are made outside of the United States you are correct. We appreciate the feedback/ comment. If there is a video you would like to see let us know we are always looking for ideas.
