My sermon in April on Hell: • He Descended Into Hell?
Bible Verses that are relevant
1. 1 Peter 3:18-20 "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits-to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built."
Interpretation: Some believe this passage suggests that after His death, Jesus went to the realm of the dead (often referred to as "hell" or "Hades") to proclaim victory to the spirits there, possibly those who had died in the time before the flood.
2. Ephesians 4:8-10 "Therefore it says, 'When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.' (In saying, 'He ascended,' what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)"
Interpretation: This passage is sometimes interpreted to mean that Jesus descended to the "lower parts of the earth," understood by some as the underworld or the abode of the dead, before ascending to heaven.
3. Acts 2:27, 31 "For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption." (Acts 2:27, quoting Psalm 16:10); "he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption." (Acts 2:31)
Interpretation: In Peter’s sermon at Pentecost, he quotes Psalm 16:10, applying it to Jesus, suggesting that Jesus was in "Hades" (the Greek term for the abode of the dead) but was not abandoned there and was resurrected before His body could decay.
4. Revelation 1:18 "I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades."
Interpretation: Jesus’ statement about holding the keys of death and Hades suggests His authority over these realms, which some interpret as a reference to His descent to and triumph over the powers of death.
5. Matthew 12:40 "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
Interpretation: "The heart of the earth" is sometimes interpreted as a reference to Jesus' time in the realm of the dead (or "hell") between His death and resurrection.
