One of my fav videos was if the two fit older guys cranking out a stack of lumber with their well-worn Thomas (6013?). That's what Thomas, and Mainers generally, represent to me. No glam, no BS. While I was trying to pick a sawmill last year, I was disappointed that there weren't more Thomas videos. I decided to make some and give my impressions. These first videos weren't planned in any way, and I failed to show the boards I got from these logs, which were striking.

I had one of these mills. I liked the Honda motor but the rest of it was pretty crude .Not in the same class as a WoodmiZer. Or Norwood.I had the trailer setup but it never moved so... The newer ones might be more refined. They are much more expensive now.

We have a lot of good choices for mills in north america and it was a tough choice. I think anything not Chinese would have worked well. Availability was a major issue. I liked the Cook's, Woodmizer LT15W, NW HD36, TimberKing. The Thomas 3220 head is so heavy that it doesn't flinch going through the logs, and it was perfectly level out of the gate. The mill weighs 2000lb so I can see where my money went.

I view many youtube videos of sawmills in operation. And regardless of what brand machine is shown I always end up reaching the same conclusion and saying to myself 'gee that is a lot of money to spend on this machine (around $12,000+ with trailer) to cut rough lumber for myself' and then have to store it to dry it out and plane it and cut it into usable boards. It might be OK for people who use a lot of rough unfinished lumber, but for the rest of us it is sure a lot of expense and work to get finished on 4 sides usable lumber.

Everything you say is valid, and time will tell if I ever get a dollar-for-dollar payback out of this machine. However, > A weeklong vacation at the beach with a VRBO rental, airfair and car rental, etc., is about $6k. It's fun but the money is just gone. The mill is still worth what I paid for it though. >A lot of mill buyers have specific projects in mind, after which they sell their mlls. I have a heavily-wooded parcel of land with plenty of down trees - tall norway pines and harwoods. >The machine produces an essential raw material. If desparate times come, I might be able to trade for other useful things and be helpful to others. It's not such a stretch -my great grandparents lost nearly everything they had when the banks failed in 1929.

Are U a Mainer?

No, I'm from away. :) The mill is parked on our wooded property near Sandstone, MN. I drove to Maine last June to pick it up the mill, and I thought it Maine was a gorgeous and fascinating place. I was informed that a person can not become a Mainer. Transplants are always from away.

@@macgyver4470 Right on. People here have a strong will and can "talk" alot about people from away but for the most part, are very accepting of people if they are good folks. I live about 10 minutes from Brooks where Thomas Mills are made, and that was the reason I was asking. Thank you

@@diggingupnorth3453 Ha. Who cares? Just tell them you are from Mass. ,which is Maines mother! Maine was a colony of a colony. Its been going downhill since it separated from Mass. in 1820. If you live there for 30 years you will be more accepted but never part of the in crowd. Its not a warm and fuzzy group here. My wife says its the ULSTER-Scot personality. Lots of people here immigrated from there in the 1700,s.

Very sad indeed that some Americans are so scared and living in so much fear that they wear a gun on their hip working in their own backyard. Sad indeed.

Hi Sam. I can tell you're really troubled by this so let me explain. To me the gun is an irritation. I don't like the weight on my body, the responsibility of handling it safely, or the risk of accidents. I bring it to the cabin for two specific reasons - by day, I share my wild land with bears, bobcats, coyotes, badgers, skunks, porcupines... I have 4 smaller dogs that could be threatened as we roam around. By night - the risk is the humans. Lots of meth-heads around that can be extremely dangerous and bold. These are people who will steal whatever they can find and then burn your place down for fun. It's not folklore, it has been happening for many years now.

@@macgyver4470 Hi Macgyver, I fully understand your reasons (better safe than sorry), yet it is still very sad indeed that people today do not feel safe in their own backyards. My daughter and son-in-law live in Northwest NJ Delaware Water Gap area and my other son and his family lives in the Pocono Mountains of PA and although there are large numbers of bears in those areas none of them wear guns on their hips.., but they do keep their small dogs in a fenced in area to protect them from the bears. If you are getting many bears in your yard try cherry bombs or M80 fireworks. Wacked out crazy drug users are getting to be a problem almost everywhere and I do understand that more and more people are just going crazy and 'Losing it' every day and doing totally senseless acts, yet my point is merely that it is very sad when any homeowner living in any state does not feel safe even in their own backyard. PS: Back in the mid 1970's I worked in federal law enforcement for a few years and believe me I know how uncomfortable wearing a gun/holster all day is and I could not wait to take it off each day.
