From Milwaukee: Charger makes audible noise Pack voltage low This is most prevalent if NiCd battery packs lower than 18.0V are placed on the charger. NO damage will result. Deeply discharged Li-Ion battery packs may also temporarily exhibit this effect.

Milwaukee seriously thought that it was acceptable to ship a product that makes this kind of noise? That's astounding. It makes me question everything about the product. I am an engineer (bachelors and masters degrees in ME), with over 30 years experience in designing products for the retail market. I have over 20 US patents. This screaming charger is NOT an acceptable customer solution. It's annoying as heck. I am so deeply disappointed that a US company, especially one selling at the high end of the market, would ship something like this.

Have same happening on mine that I got with one key fuel set. Looks like manufacturers defect and I might try to ignore the noise but it’s also heats up very nicely especially while charging my 9.0 battery and I’m just worried the whole thing will melt or catch on fire if left unattended. At first I though that maybe they installed fan into rapid one (I have two regular ones from my older generation fuel set and second from cordless 15ga gun but neither makes that noise but they’re also not a “rapid” version). Looks like Milwaukee dropped a ball on this one🙄, at least they should offer to ship new one with return label for defective they designed and produced. I have had four of these rapid Chargers and still currently have 2 of them, all of which make the same high pitch squeal. This nose is not only when it is a deeply discharged pack. No matter what the state of charge/discharge is of the pack, or the amp hour capacity of the pack, all of them Weatherby a 1.5 a 2.0 a 4.0 a 5.0 or a 9.0 the charger will make high pitch squeal. Additionally it does not matter if it isn't M18 battery or an M12 battery charger squeals all the time everytime. After the light starts flashing green the squeal slowly diminishes. However the charger does not get hot and neither does the battery packs

Thank you for the post. I've had Milwaukee all my life since 1998 as an electrician and owned a lot of tools and just as you have experienced, I just purchased a Milwaukee pole saw kit with the same drive unit, battery size and rapid charger. I also purchased about 6 months ago. A a blower kit with the same 8 amp hour battery and rapid charger and it never made the whine. It'll be curious to see if I put this new battery on that old rapid charger if it does the same noise. I actually thought there was a fan in it like the Makita chargers. It was so loud. I hooked up my large shop vac to it to cool it off to see if that would take away some of the noise and I think it's slightly did but nothing dramatic. My regular chargers charge with no noise and my other rapid charger charges with no noise. As an electrician, I'm not sure if this is the case of the electronics lottery, meaning after manufacturing, transistors are tested and they will fall on a calibrated scale of quality. The ones that pass very high go to expensive stuff like Cree, LEDs and really good power, then of course other companies that want to market at a lower cost, pick up the lower quality. Milwaukee makes an amazing product so I'm not concerned about bad components but they may have a few parts in these rapid chargers that aren't as high-end as they could have been. 100% speculation though. I'll just use my other chargers.

I would recommend reading through the comments on the video. There is a lot of good information left by others who had the same problem. In the end, I didn’t like/trust the noisy rapid charger so I returned the blower & bush trimmer set it came with. I also switched to Ego for high power consumption yard tools. The Ego rapid chargers have fans to dissipate heat and they don’t squeal. I still have a bunch of M12 and M18 powered Milwaukee hand tools. Mine sounds exactly like this one. I came out to see how my battery was doing and found it making this same noise. At first I though the battery was shorting out or something but then realized that it was the brand new charger. Tried the battery on the original slow charger and it was fine. Tried a 12v battery on the rapid charger and had the same issue.

Got the same String Trimmer kit with free 2nd gen blower. The charger makes the exact same high pitched noise. It the only M18 charger I have so I can't really waste time sending it in. Maybe after the fall when I don't need the trimmer and blower every week I'll send it in.

I can hear mine charging in the basement on the 1st floor. Plus its smells like burnt plastic and it gets pretty hot. Getting hot I understand for rapid charging but I believe this is defective in some way. Sent Acme tools a email, and milwaukee. Will call during regular business hours. Might have to send this in and wait for a new one, not too thrilled but I bought online and don't feel like boxing up and sending back the whole thing photos.app.goo.gl/l3nZDd1wzlgZ0sZn2 Tried a couple M12 batteries in this rapid charger and its just as bad as the 9.0ah M18 battery. I put the M12's in the M12 regular charger and not even the smallest hum.

Adding more to this incase anyone else has the problem. While its charging and 4 bars are on the battery pack and the charger is still lighting up solid, I can take the battery off, put it back on and the charger light becomes solid green. Something is def off with this charger.

@@Jay-sg2ww I ordered 2 trimmer kits and received them today, both chargers squeal and hiss and I can hear them from 20 feet away. Plus the one I tested in the kitchen, I charged the 8ah battery it came with for about 30 minutes, when I went to check on it the kitchen stank of burning circuits and melted plastic...No way in hell this is right. Either way I'm returning that one because the trimmer is also defective, vibrates violently and the motor seems to rattle pretty bad when coming to a full stop. Looking good Milwaukee....looking good.....

Gabriel, know you posted this awhile ago, but if you see this - How long was Milwaukee's turn around time for you to get it fixed? Did you have to pay for shipping? Etc? I just got delivery of this yesterday, and being my only m18 tool I only have this one charger. Would hate to be without the charger for weeks or months.

Sending me a new Rapid Charger. Told me to try the new one out. If its good just return the old one. I'll update if the new one works better.

My question is why doesnt my M18 charger make this noise? Why is this noise only on the Dual Rapid M12 M18 Rapid Charger? It's Obvious something isn't right and who wants a lound noise like that when your working in someone's home and not using power tools. Mine is pretty loud also. If it was Normal, Milwaukee would not ask you to send it back, they would tell you its Normal. Seems there are alot of these high pitched Dual Rapid Chargers Being sold on Ebay as new. I think they are more of Rejects than New.... Ill be Notifying my Seller on Ebay and ask for an Exchange. Because it is not normal and could be a sign of it giving in down the road? Like I mentioned earlier, if it was Normal Milwaukee would not ask you to send it back for a new one or even look at it to repair it. Just my 2 Cents. Thanks for sharing this.

I have two Of the same chargers and I charge 6.0 lithium batteries and 5.0 and even some regular smaller standard batteries on it daily & been using mine for about two years now the buzzing is normal. But you never know These days😅 in the Construction world we just use it until it breaks . My only problem was worrying about an explosion while sleeping or direct fire 🔥 . It’s annoying but still useful . 🤷🏽♂️

People calm down. It's normal. It's because it's charging at a high rate. If it didn't people would complain about how slow it charges. Customer service doesn't know anything about what they're selling, they're just regular people that sit behind a desk and look up in their database what questions or concerns you have.

How can you even say it is normal? My rapid charger made that horrible noise and had it replaced by Milwaukee and this one has no noise whatsoever. Two months later have purchased a jigsaw +Batteies + the rapid charger and made the same terrible noise. Have had it sent to Milwaukee and they've sent me a new replacement and that again, does not make any noise. So how can you explain this then? I've had many other power tools by other let's say competitors, but not a single charger made any noise whatsoever. Zero problems with them. So one can conclude that Milwaukee has a real problem with it seems the whole range of chargers but...who knows it could be some EVIL engineering going on. So if the chargers go wrong they will gradually decrease the battery life (so it will only last as long as the warranty lasts after that you just have no other choice but to fork out money for a new set of batteries + a new charger and the story starts over.

Yep, my brand new Milwaukee rapid charger makes a hissing sound (but no squealing yet) when starting to charge a deeply discharged battery. Then, the hissing dies down in the last portion of the charging (green light flashing). I took it apart and saw that it's very cheaply made (for a 6 amp charger), the ventilation is poor, and the components are small and cheap. The culprit seems to be a high-voltage transformer that looks poorly wrapped in some scotch tape. I guess we're hearing the wire coil vibrating at a high frequency (this is a switch mode type PSU) inside the transformer under high load. Also, there's a foul smell coming from all the components that heat up. I really don't know how this crap can be UL approved?
