Riotinto is a large area with open-pit and underground mines. It was established in the 18th century by the English (whose employees brought soccer to Spain) and was in operation until the 1980s. Corta Atalaya is the largest open-pit mine in Europe. Even the Romans operated small mines here. Today all mining operations are stopped but companies are hopeful to reopen in the coming years. Meanwhile it is a National Park with a toursit train ride and a museum. Oh, and in the museum is a train wagon once used by the English queen on her journey to India. en.wikipedia.or... and www.parqueminer...
