Re-upload with higher quality. Watch it in HD! Original description: From the anime movie directed by Masaaki Yuasa. Amazing how random scenes spliced together in the right way can have such a profound effect.
The first time i watched this movie, i was so depressed, frustrated and totally gave up on life. I was so sure that the future wasn´t holding anything for me. I was so invested in maintaining my self image of an smartass, intellectual and snob person. Years later i started doing mountaineering and rock climbing and that has filled my soul in a way i never imagined. So, for anyone that need to hear this: don´t give up, and stop holding the image you have created of yourself, life and this amazing world has a lot of suprises waiting for you. The posibilities are really endless and beyond your imagination.

That moment when you realize that every single step you have ever taken or not taken has affected or not affected somebodies life in someway because that is the story of humanity, even before you were here someone contributed to your life by choosing to take those steps. But the story of humanity never ends because just by watching this film you are continuing the story.

After the characters escape from that hellish, desperate situation, we as the viewer come to relish, cherish every moment depicted here. In the beginning this montage meant nothing, but after everything that happened?... I was so happy and so grateful to merely set my eyes upon this montage. I burst into tears.

my friend and i believe the old man doesnt want to identify as a man and is gay. in all the flashbacks for him in this, hes looking at lipstick, jewelry, enjoying the material things about women rather than the actual women. there is a part where its the poster of nearly nude women, and then him trying to tuck. man i love the constant intrigue with this movie. i feel like only the yuasa himself really knows, but that ambiguity is powerful

it might be just a thing for her mother, really. consider that war is shown through all of their childhood, but it appears as a game until their first memory gets bombarded, then life happens and things change. the memories of him looking curiously at women's intimacy are replicated by his first memories of walking by billboards of women holding mom's hand, and are followed by him finding a partner. it's more of a self discovery thing, setting the tone for the rest of the film. the life of a criminal is spliced into the story as a counterpoint, to fully drive home the point that your life is, in great part, the consequence of your own decisions.

This scene just left my head spinning. Even after watching it, I have so many questions about that scene with Aniki (the senior yakuza who was with Atsu) that came before the final sequence did, but to even bother asking itself would be a potential spoiler that I wouldn't *dare* say.
@mnemot

The story has never ended. He knows the whale's coming for him, and this time it almost got him; it got people killed, egos dissolved. This time he chooses to keep escaping, towards a life where whales can't get him, but deep down we all know you can only escape the whale by being reborn... And maybe just making one decision differently counts as being born again, since, y'know, your life is the result of your own decisions. It says so on the billboard.
@Protoman2024
3 жыл бұрын
@@mnemot Yup...safe to say Aniki took that to heart since he ran off with Myon's mother onto a train before the montage. Kinda heartwarming given that it was implied that Atsu and his fellow yakuza were putting pressure on her over what her ex-husband did; atleast we know Aniki gets to be with the one he's wanted to love for so long. Whether or not the trio we were introduced to did the same is beyond me, especially since Atsu didn't catch up to them that time.

The scenes shown in this video tell a chronological story over decades about the Old Man's life, his son(The Yakuza who smokes cigs) and the other character's lives as well. First the Old Man as a baby, he grows up married with a kid. He's involved in the drug trade where they hide drugs in kids' toys. A deal goes wrong and he ends up in the whale. His son grows up and starts dating the girl who would become Myon's mother, she is picked up by a playboy(the disco scene) who is Myon's Father. Etc. Etc. Basically, if you take dialogue from the movie explaining backstory and try to remember what characters look like(the old man with the big nose for example), you can piece together the story it's telling. The clips where it shows stuff like the Olympics or rockets blasting off is there to give us the time frame. What you get out of the film is a more personal question.
@zinkoffanddgohome
6 жыл бұрын
From my personal understanding, the main character is born again. When he comes out into the world from the mouth of the whale, his clothes are torn apart to his undies. I think that signifies rebirth. Innocence is gained. We see him stepping on the fish and octopus against the tides. That signifies evolution and how amost all odds (against the tide) the homosapiens are created. When the main character gets out of the whales mouth we see ship, aeroplane, train now we are looking at the history of innovation greated by humans then with these innovation we used them as a tool to be precise we used them as weapons (as seen by the tank and bomb blasts in the scene). In the next scene, we see a tall building which looks like office building. That building for me symbolizes humans being domisticated. Prisoned in their cubicle where you see nothing but your work ahead like what they use for horses. But the main character runs through these rooms naked which is showing that he is not bending to what is called normal in the capatilistic society. He is not wearing suit and tie but running naked and then he jumps out the window sort of like denouncing all the bs the society at this point has told us is normal so we fit in a perfect square box. Then the rest is the characters back story. Just my own analysis not saying it is 100% accurate. :)

When I watched it I was high affff and my theory is that when he died all that happened afterwards was in his mind. (like u can see in this video there are scenes of fish, and other things god was shown at the start)because those are the things mc remembered at the back of his head. Also no way anything like that could happen in the whale (like falling tanks and trains) so even what happened afterwards when they escaped was just vision of perfect future for mc). Yk everything ended when he was shot. Anything afterwards was in his head.
@Yaka_1622

Also I thought it was obvious but yea old man was 100% in love with mc. Cuz this movie is just so fucked up(in a goof way, it was 10 for me). But yea basically now that I think abt it when he saw a god myb that actually was a god and mc could choose between dissapiering and not dissappearing. If he would chose to dissapear then he would die even in his mind(endend darkness) but he choose a path of life so I guess god lent him the ability to just play a game in his mind yk.. OR that was already just his mind (creating a god) idk
