Having grown up In Newlyn and Marazion as a teenager in the 60s, the history and geology of tin and copper mining in Cornwall always fascinated me, particularly of Botallack, Geevor and Levant in and around St Just and Pendeen. Briefly explored a couple of adits , but far too safety conscious and claustrophobic to go far. Your videos are fascinating and really highlight the incredibly difficult conditions the old miners used to work in. This video really shows how most of the mines in Cornwall were "wet" and unworkable without constant pumping and why there were so many engine houses in the county just to support the need to drain the mine workings. Even since the 60s, so much has changed in the county with most of the access points sealed and the old spoil heaps gone. Keep up with the fascinating videos but please take care.

Very nice video Ben. I would say that ore was raised in a skip which self emptied into the 'pit', actually an ore pass/hopper and then drawn off into a truck. Been years since I was last in there but seem to remember a way into the bottom of the ore pass? I am lucky in that I have a skip underground at Cwmystwyth, albeit minus an axle. I only know of one other and that's under water, again in Wales..
@BenoCam

Cheers Roy. Yes you can get down in under that ore pit although the adit from there is collapsed . We thought maybe the ore would have gone right to the top else why birthed extending the decline all the way to the top ? The adit is now very hard to find it’s incredibly well camouflaged

@@BenoCam Probably for a surface winder. There would obviously be the need for pumping, as well as crushing. I fancy that somewhere there are the remains of a waterwheel pit, there was a wheel at the bottom of the valley. Possibly a run of flat rods like was common in Wales, with a gearing mechanism so that the power could be applied to whatever was required. All speculation though!

Thank you for these videos Ben, I really enjoy watching you videos mine explores and wreck diving. I love history, especially Cornish history. :D How would they have flooded the mine? Would it be dynamite under the seabed?
@BenoCam
2 жыл бұрын
No problem Linda glad you are enjoying them. In this case it’s just ground water dripping in to the workings and the lower drainage adit has either collapsed or been purposely sealed up, so over time it’s just slowly filled with water. They didn’t purposely flood the workings, it’s just they didn’t maintain the system that keeps the water out of that makes sense.

There is a mine near me its vast inside you descend down a wide massive cavern and at the bottom the tunnels going in deeper are flooded, there is a bypass on an upper section so I think the flooded sections may be accessible for someone to dive

@BenoCam
11 ай бұрын
It’s still notoriously difficult to find. There’s also a huge amount of adits on OS maps which no longer exit. There’s a holly tree right in front of it which is why I described it as being camouflaged. For example you wouldn’t spot it from a drone survey. Hope this helps.

Please get cave certified. This is a really dangerous game. The risks here are far beyond what you mention and the breakdown you are seeing all over the underwater sections means the mine is currently being supported *exclusively* by the pressure of water pushing against the rock. Those bubbles dislodging loose formations you mention are indeed silting out the water and reducing vis, but the exponentially greater risk is that the bubbles reduce the support the water is providing to the ceiling and cause a large breakdown. This isn’t a worst case scenario, it is a highly likely scenario since the environment is man made, and the formations are not naturally occurring like a cave system.
@BenoCam

I hear what your saying and thank you for your concern but I cannot see how getting myself any further qualified will reduce the risk of the whole place collapsing while I was in there. Now that I have done this one there is no need to go back. 🙂
