Avete everyone! And here's another update on my Minecraft Rome Map.
In this series I will make small videos about the updates of my Minecraft Rome project. In this project I'm recreating ancient Rome in the year 200 AD. Currently I'm busy with what I call the 'Beautification Updates'. These updates are about changing various buildings to look better as well as placing them in the right position (I started building this project with a little lack of knowledge of the buildings which has forced me to fix all of this now :P). I hope you'll like the videos.
Circus Maximus:
The Circus Maximus (largest circus) was one of the largest buildings in Rome. The area where the Circus was built had been used for chariot races and other religious events ever since the Roman Kingdom. Supposedly even the very first gladiator fight was held on the site of the Circus. The location (between the Aventine and Palatine hills) therefore had significant ties with religios and sporting events.
For a long time the Circus wasn't a permanent building. Whenever games or religious ceremonies were held wooden seating areas would be built by the Romans, only to be removed after the event was over. The first permanent building of the Circus was built in 329 BC, when a permanent starting area for chariots was constructed.
As Rome's population grew, the Circus became larger and larger and also more parts of it would be built permanently. Julius Caesar for example extended the seating area along the entire track and also built a moat between the track and the seats. This helped with drainage, but also to keep dangerous animals away from the spectators.
The Circus reached its final shape and size under emperor Trajan, who had the entire building erected in stone to reduce the risk of fire. Eventually the Circus reached a length of 621 metres and a width of 118 metres. With a capacity of 250.000 spectators, the Circus Maximus was the largest stadium ever built in human history!
The most populair event held at the Circus were the chariot races. A chariot race consisted of seven counter-clockwise laps around the spina (spine) of the track. The laps would be counted by removing a golden egg and turning a golden dolphin around (symbols of the gods Castor and Pollux, who are the gods of horses). Four teams, each with three riders, would participate using four horse chariots called quadriga's. Although a lot of money could be won by winning races, it was an extremely dangerous sport. Many charioteers die at a young age due to accidents on track.
Now that the Circus Maximus is finished I'll work on a bunch of smaller buildings in order to fill up some space between the new buildings. So there will be a couple of smaller updates coming soon.
