I've got this kit in my stash and I think the quality of the plastic is so good it really doesn't need photo-etch, it's excellent as it is. I have got carried away in the past buying aftermarket resin and etch that doesn't actually add anything to the finished product and takes a lot of time, effort and money. That's just my personal opinion and I'm sure others will disagree.

This is on my build next list. Should be an enjoyable build. The decal sheet being split into areas is a great idea. You can do one side and leave them, do the other side and so on. Hunting for decals on the sheet is often as frustrating as finding parts across frames.

Detail does look amazing, and the mould is superb. If I was gonna split any hairs... it would the cockpit floor. This is a -25, and I thought ( could be wrong) that the 25 brought in a smooth floor, replacing the corrugated one. Not going to notice once the canopy is on, but it's a question for the rivet counters. Wouldn;t stop me buying and building it...even though I prefer the Razorback version as a modelling subject.

Apparently someone watched an unboxing video and commented that they are cheap ways of making content and pointless. Discussed on Mos6510's Airfix and Chill live stream last night. My response is that the person who said that is talking utter *thinks of a polite word* rubbish. Gary, /every/ unboxing video has IMHO /immense/ value, and I for one appreciate all of you that take the time to do them. As a few of the panel pointed out unboxing reviews do take a long time [I'm sure your workload would be a damn sight smaller without them]. I don't do YT videos but I would imagine there's a basic checklist of issues to cover such as: Box detail and type Kit packaging Sprues: Type of plastic, undershots, broken / missing parts, release agent? Kit: Amount of detail; panel lines recessed or raised Clear parts: how clear are they? Decals: Registration, colour, fragility Instructions: Clarity Ancillary items, such as paints in an Airfix Starter Set... are they usable? I've probably missed a few items but those are off the top of my head. I view unboxing videos as having a /great/ value, in several ways: 'Try before you buy'.. or in this case watch someone else try before you buy. As Alex said last night if a customer asked if they could see the content of a /second hand/ item in his shop he would show them, but - I think quite rightly - wouldn't unseal and open a completely new kit. [It's just occurred to me that any retailer having done that would have an impossible task then of convincing other customers that the kit /was/ new as it had been opened]. So unboxing videos give the consumer the opportunity to make - as John Parker said - an /informed/ choice. Then they can decide for themselves if the kit is within their skill level, for instance raised panel lines may not faze them as they may decide to sand them all off and inscribe new ones. They could be an FAA veteran and see the Mistercraft Sea Harrier you reviewed Gary on a shelf and think it looks nice; only seeing the box opening video would show them what a truly /awful/ kit it is and the makers IMHO deserve the moniker Mistercr@p. The consumer might see a shiny new boxed kit and mistakenly think the kit is new too, and only after watching an unboxing video would they understand that the kit inside was tooled when God's dog was a puppy and has more flash than a 1980s scifi comedy with a bloke called Gordon. Unboxing videos are the first step in a /process/. In the real world a consumer buys a kit and takes it home, opens the box, then builds the kit. Unboxing videos are /part of that process/ and I think an essential one. You watch an unboxing, you think the kit looks good enough to part with your money, but you wonder 'It looks good but how easy is it to build? Were there any hidden SNAFUs in the instructions, such as parts built in the wrong order, don't /quite/ fit etc.?' So you decide to watch the Build video of the same kit, and those questions get answered. No you won't build it in the same way, and you won't have exactly the same experience and skill level, so you will only see /a/ way to make the kit not the /only/ way. What you /will/ see though is the modeller encounter any difficulties the kit and/or it's instructions presented, /and/ how the modeller overcame them. You may think 'I'd have done it differently' and that's fine, but equally you could have thought 'I'd have been royally stuffed, thanks for the advice!' So after that somewhat lengthy post I hope I've made it clear what side of the fence I'm sat on. Firmly on the side supporting the continued existence of unboxing videos!

I suggest someone saying they are cheap ways of making content doesn't run a YT channel for themselves. Really cheap way of making content is to sit in front of a smart phone, spout some opinions, and upload it.

Well said Julian. A good reviewer will know their onions and also inform the viewer the age of the kit/original moulds. In some cases, like in last nights Airfix n Chill, where other companies have bought those old moulds and pass them off as their own. Unfortunately nowadays there aren't that many high street shops, where we can look for ourselves, what the kits are like before you make your choice. Almost everything is online now so a good review like this is another tool we need along with sites like Scalemates, for example. It's good consumer practice. Looking forward to tonights Gary's Stuff Live Stream (16th July). 👍

@@ENLSN77 Good point about the lack of local shops, but even then you can't normally look /inside/ the box unless as I mentioned it's second hand and the shop owner doesn't mind. *note to self: don't forget the live steam tonight*

What a kit but way out of my league at the moment. Maybe after i butcher a few 1/72 Lidl kits to get my eyes and hands back, I'll give the Airfix 1/48 Spit Vb a go, then maybe....
@crazylocha2515

Question i have after seeing your unboxing, how many kits would you estimate that a new builder probably should have completed before tackling this particular kit?
@garys_stuff
Ай бұрын
I'll know once I've started it, but it doesn't look overly complicated, just beautifully detailed! Provided a person works with patience, test fits everything, makes sure they clean the parts when they come off the frames and so on (so, essential basic skills) it looks very achievable. Maybe three or four of increasing complexity if they've not made anything before. In Airfix terms (which is what I know most), I'd say a starter set first, then something like one of the 1/48 Spitfires to get used to the scale, then something with a bit more complexity and small parts like a 1/72 bomber. But remember this is the basic set - the advanced set with photo etch and resin parts is a different story!

@@garys_stuff because it's a basic kit, and usually a tad more affordable, and well regarded kit, so I'm figuring more likely to get picked up by newer modellers. My guestimate was between 5 and 10. Well put with the increasing difficulty, great point. 👍
