Superb, honest review. The Arturia MiniLab 3 suits my needs but I’m admittedly only barely scratching the surface of its capabilities. The software integration is the factor that has already helped me to leapfrog what I was capable of in the Akai MPK Mini III. // I’m the type of person (non-musician) who uses the arpeggiator and chord mode so these features are great, IMO, but I can see how a more mature music maker might regard them as unnecessary. The workflow with its peculiar combination of button presses and states takes a little bit of getting used to but fortunately Arturia has excellent documentation. Honestly, I want to love my Akai but the superior product design behind the MiniLab 3 is its most outstanding feature.

I went to buy my first controller a couple weeks ago to use with Bitwig, and I was between this and the Keystep 32. But ended up choosing the Keystep because of the aftertouch. I need to get now another controller with encoders and faders like the Akai midimix. But I wish Arturia made a Akai mini plus competitor with the Keystep 37 keys that have aftertouch. That would be insta buy from me.

Most informative! So to simply start playing in Live Arranger mode it needs two fingers? With shift only? or it can be turned into a mode when pads directly work as Transport buttons. TNX! If so, Arturia fixed it for me with much anticipated Lab and DAW control. Though clicking to select a preset (and no sound preview without a click) it's a bit awkward. .... no preorder yet ....

AFAIK, yes. Two fingers to use the transport controls. Preset auto-load without clicking used to be a thing on the Mk2 I think, I wonder why they changed it.

@@XanderEwald I just checked again. 1. Hovering/Scrolling over presets works. 2. Clicking on a preset loads it. Same as a mouse. Maybe in the beginning but, this is the behavior at present.

can't find the answer; in live; if there is no rack loaded in a track; does it automatically map the first eight parameters? could be useful for vsts (when you have to choose which parameters to control anyway). Also does the browsing of presets work on any V collection / pigments plugins or just in analog lab? Also red somewhere that inside live the encoders are seen as pots; which mean they don't automatically take the value of the parameter and you have to reach it; which would really suck and defeat the purpose of having encoders; can someone confirm this? it's always awkward in ableton to have automatic midi mapping to vsts; on one hand it's convenient; on the other if you want to automate a parameter you have to add it to your automatable list and map a different CC to it. or you know record the midi and have it stuck inside your clip as an obscure CC number and not an editable parameter in the arranger view. they should do something about this (at least give me the midi CCs as automatable parameters). anyway the overall live implementation seems well thought out; too bad you can't edit more than 8 device parameters; and too bad there is no dedicated transport keys (at least play/stop)

I'm about to sell my Launchkey mini 3 as I don't like the feel of the keybed and I find all the functionality for Ableton distracting as it works primarily with Ableton's Session view and I work in the Arrangement view.

I think selecting the right keys is a very subjective decision, as everyone has different needs. I am personally very happy with the Arturia keys, I prefer the slightly harder response to the softer, mushier keys of some other companies. I can't say anything about the larger Arturia keyboards because I did not try them yet.

what midi controller would you suggest for someone getting into electronic music production as a beginner?
@XanderEwald
Жыл бұрын
It's tough to give a general suggestion. It depends on your workflow, skills, type of music, and software. I would recommend getting something affordable with pads, keys, faders, and knobs, the complete package. Use it for a while, and you will recognize what is essential for your process. Only then move on to more specialized, pricey controllers.
