Rode and Deity are adequate for youtube. For more sophisticated filmmaking may I recommend the Sennheiser 50 for in-studio voice(s) and the Sennheiser 416 for exterior voices. These are professional mics in the $1,000 range. They match perfectly. It will sound as if a veil has been lifted. The clarity, presence, range and texture of these two mics makes Rode and Deity sound like toys. Additionally, DPA has just released the new 2017 shotgun, a pared down version of the 4017b which is generally regarded as the finest shotgun ever made, also for $1,000. These three mics are also good for on-camera. Less work in post EQ.

Why do people use that R0DE pistol grip at the end of a boom pole? Isn’t that for doing handheld, “on-location” style mic-ing? I see the same thing with the Rycote one too. No hate, just curious, and FOMO-ing out over it lol. Is it really that much better than the SM4-R (same shock mount, sans pistol grip)?

Wow! This was such a great education! Didn't know about scratch audio, that's cool! Learned about how you can use broken film equipment and still make it useful! Appreciated hearing what you set your audio levels to and some of your audio editing preferences, loved that! Curious why you're using two different types of microphones rather than having both mics being exactly the same? Like is there an advantage to having two different types? This was such a great video, thank you!

Glad it was helpful and that you gained some ideas and helpful tips! :D I use two different mics because I just have them here mostly but also the Deity d3pro can be XLR or 3.5mm which is helpful if I want it straight into camera. The Rode NTG5 is an XLR only type, so it's really meant for the external recorder.Hope that helps make sense

Have you ever tried the multi cam instead of the synchronizing? One of the Dylans recommended not using synchronizing and I've been impressed with just using the multicam. Synchronizing works, but I found I was always moving the audio around because it was slightly off. Multicam syncs up much better for me.

It's easier to sync one long take. When I do my youtube videos I do a long take (I usually can get it all done before the timer limit of the camera) and then sync the audio and video in post. :D

Again - great video, thank you for all the information with the set up by also especially with the post production of the sound. For newbies that's a .... ;) A quick Q, you're wearing a lav mic for this video, as I've seen in some of your other videos as well - but where the heck do you hide the mic?!? Look great that you can't see the clips on and cable or the for some brands big wireless box that is the mic 😂
@FellowFilmmaker

Glad it was helpful for you! Haha, yeah I do hide it so you don't see it since that annoys me. :D I use these lil things called stickies (you can find em on my kit here: kit.co/FellowFilmmaker/audio-gear ). The stickie goes onto the mic and then onto whatever you want to attach it to. I use the inside of the shirt or skin sometimes, just depends.

Actually both audio and video seemed very good. _Maybe_ slightly different than your other videos, but well within normal variation and standards. Also, I think those ties are bongo ties. Can someone else confirm? Also curious though, who does the BTS of you?
@FellowFilmmaker
3 жыл бұрын
Well that's nice to know, haha, I felt it was far from my expectation of whats ok. :) And yes, some folks call them bongo ties, these ones I've always heard as whip ties. I got some from Think tank once and that's what they call them. Haha, funny you mention the BTS. I usually am doing it myself. But my friend was nearby and was able to grab a quick shot for me in this video. But normally, it's just a slider, a tripod, or some other crazy way of getting a shot of myself. #oneistheloneliestnumber

Hey, my question is if you are you using XLR or "normal" DSLR audio cables. AFAIK XLR have a design that is shielded against interferences but normal audio cables have not. Don't you have problems with interferences when using audio cables? I always have problem when booming a microphone but I use very cheap cables. Would you recommend using XLR for that reason?
@FellowFilmmaker
3 жыл бұрын
I use XLR cables for my Rode NTG5 from Mogami, they haven't had any issues yet. As far as the cheap 3.5mm extension I'm using on the Deity (just because I want to plug into camera) it's not the greatest and there are probably better options. So yes, I would typically advise to use XLR when you can because it keeps the audio as issue free and clean as possible. I just use 3.5mm on my Deity cuz I want good scratch audio.
@bernhardreviews
3 жыл бұрын
@@FellowFilmmaker ok thanks was just wondering what you are using on the Deity, but because it is just scratch audio it does not matter I guess... still think it is annoying to have to sync audio in post which I guess you still have to do... I use a wireless lavalier to avoid that (and also to avoid interference because of cables) but of course this will not be the best quality...
