You can absolutely save that cast iron! It needs to be seasoned. Scrub with coarse salt and a touch of soap. I suggest steel wool for the initial cleaning. Once the rust us cleared, coat with a thin layer of oil and place in hot oven for 1 hour. After cooking, clean with hot water & salt and coat again with oil and bake. You need to build up the "season" on it so it doesn't rust and food doesn't stick.
@ArrowHillCottage

We will give that a try! I know that back when I was using it I would get frustrated with food sticking…I suppose that was because it wasn’t seasoned properly (or at all)! ❤️

You are daring suggesting that boys and girls might have different interests - haha! Just filled a bag (no boxes available) with five dvds, three pairs of unworn earrings, a beautiful new summer top that is way too low (Yikes!), and an almost new leather bag that I feel is too small. Sometimes purchases just don't work out but someone else will benefit. I hope your summer is fun. That is a very long school break compared to here in the UK 🇬🇧, which can be six or seven weeks.

Yes, summer break can be so long here! I’ve always been in the habit of doing worksheets and refreshers with the kids during those months. I feel like it would be easy to lose progress with such a long time off! As far as the books…I held onto them for quite a long time, wondering if the girls would be interested - and they just never grabbed for them! They much more enjoy stories about talking animals and adventures that aren’t too ‘scary’ - but yes…I suppose I could get some backlash for saying that boys and girls might have different interests. Oh well! ❤️

What brand is your cast iron pan? If it is a USA made pan I would suggest restoring it. You can soak the pan in lye and the bad coating will melt off. If you search online for restoring cast iron pans with lye it should come up. You would need a large plastic bin to fill with water and add the lye. You can lest it soak for days or months. Then take out and soak in vinegar then clean with steal wool and re-season it with crisco in the blue can. But check online. There are many ways to restore cast iron pans.

I put off “loading the car” for taking to the donation center. Lol. Had to borrow the bigger car and now it’s chock full of stuff to get rid of. I’ve been adding stuff to it like I’m playing Jenga. 😅😅 Seems like this new mindset helps you go from Jenga in your home to Jenga with your donation piles. Lol. It really felt good tho as the “utility room” looked so spacious and felt brand new again. (Got rid of a handful of small furniture items that I didn’t really need and have replaced it with an old waterfall cedar trunk I ran across (circa 1953 lol). Struggles with the “war at home” (and working to move etc). I’m pushing through tho. From what I hear iron skillets never really die. I would say either donate or rehab it. I don’t know for sure the best method for intense rehab for it but I’d bet money that someone on YT made a video on it. Lol. Just depends if you want to work that hard or not but I def think there are folks out there who would or could rehab it if they ran across it. I got mine from a rental we were cleaning. This guy had passed but he had collected some of the coolest stuff. But he was sick so everything was pretty filthy or run down. But most of it was just fine with a good deep clean. I also made a decent mint with some of it at a church yard sale. Lol. (And kept some also). Among them tho was abt 10 or so iron skillets. I had some rust but it wasn’t “flaking.” So I just did my best to recure them and they all did just fine. I would say treat it like redoing furniture. Such as scrape and sand and scrub then your “paint” for it would be slathering it with grease and heating it up. Rinse. Repeat until it seems usable. Like old quality furniture….it’s just all about removing layers of ick and crud. Oh well that got long. Lol. But I LOVE my iron skillets. (I kept 3 originally but now I just keep 2). It’s amazing Bcuz it makes my food even yummier and those are the only dishes I don’t ever have to “wash.” All I do is “sizzle rinse,” add oil and rub it in. And other times I just keep the food in the skillet and reheat in the oven until I eat it all up.

I bet you’re right…there are probably multiple videos about it! I’ll probably give it a try and see how high maintenance it seems to be. If I don’t like the amount of effort it can be donated. How did house hunting go? Any places that stand out? ❤️

@@ArrowHillCottage Well some trouble with my toxic mother (to be expected but still some things I didn’t expect from her also). Now I’m prob going to make my “parents” blow a gasket Bcuz she yanked me around on the “proof of funds” and such. So I might sell to one of my step brothers or another guy who is around in the biz or list it. But I’ve still been talking to folks and going to see things and looking online and visiting etc. Found an affordable modular cabin builder in SC tho (they do tiny up to average sizes) and ready land plus that would really be my first choice. (They also do “cute cottage” styles etc). But I’ll just have to see what I can afford and still have a bit to live on for a minute. (I have to be cash buyer and don’t “qualify” for any kind of loans at this moment lol). Embarrassing to admit but a few years back when they were transferring all the deeds to the respective recipients, she conned and pressured me into getting her name on my deed. So yah. I mean I’m not kidding when I say someone over here is trying to keep me here on some kind of extended hostage stay. But as I said (I say this metaphorically lol….I’m not really violent lol). She’s gonna sign off on it one way or another….even if I have to break her arm. But as it goes. I’m learning. No realtor can be of much service to you unless you show proof of funds or get pre qualified. And she has been holding up both ends of that trying to pull some kind of low balling Laban on me. So I just said. Whatever. Show me all the money quickly or I’m moving on. They’re unbelievable tho. Coming back at me like “we need to meet up and discuss the funds.” 🙄🙄 That’s why I say ya know. When they find out I meant what I said, they gonna blow a gasket. 😂😂 So it’s a mixed bag. The final attempted torture of me and a lot of excitement on the other end. (I won’t be letting anyone stop me. It’s more like if you don’t get out of my way then you’re just gonna get ran over. Your choice. Lol). I love these guys in TX who do high end manufactured/modular (from park model size to multi section XXL) but they’re really too far away. Lol. Will put link in another comment.

@@ArrowHillCottage He gives all the basic stats and the price in the first 2 minutes. Lol. But they really do it up well. Sheetrock walls, (or pine or shiplap if you want), wood cabinets, wood shelving etc. Ceiling vents, tile backsplashes, tile showers, proper windows and insulation, vaulted ceilings, crown moulding, 16 inch on center frame…as they say. Lol. Warranties, new appliances. Metal roof. Etc. Hard to tell it’s a “trailer” lol. Of course you pay more for one of those huge fancy tiled walk in showers and so on but the price for just a few extras is not too shabby. But I def like the idea of a modular better plus you gotta have that built to your specific state code also and have a company who knows and services your state, etc. kzitem.info/news/bejne/2XmYuISEsYhjn5gsi=bZmk0Oh_TaE4kpdm

Good morning 🐦 look at you with an extra special smile this morning! All the better to " like"you with! Okay here's the skinny on your cast iron pan! Cast iron pans are and can be very special and special family heirlooms, they really perform like no other pan, they are especially good at holding heat and Searing, I don't like that they take longer to heat up, I feel like I'm using an undue amount of time and for me propane, if I was searing a steak or a salmon or blackening a piece of chicken or fish it is ideal, I don't do that so much anymore I don't like cleaning up the splatters all around the stove, mostly what I want to share is that I see it as a bit of a labor of love that pan, and I'm quite sure knowing you well enough that it doesn't match up with you, however, oddly enough, if it is a family heirloom you may decide years later that oh my God I wish I hadn't tossed that cast iron pan I really want one now, they do sell pre-seasoned Lodge brand cast iron pans at Walmart where you could always pick up one of you ever decide that you wanted it again

Please please please don't throw away the cast iron pan! It is totally salvageable.. There are many American videos on YT on how to restore a rusted cast-iron pan with home solutions. Just soak it in liquid soap water for 10 minutes, then scrub it hard with salt in and out, then rinse it well, wipe with cotton cloth and put it on stove for 2 minutes to let the moisture evaporate. Next time onwsrds whenever you use it, apply oil in the inside before heating it up, so that the food doesn't stick.. Already you hand-wash everything so when you wash this one, just add an extra step to dry it with a cloth n heat it up before putting away. After restoring it, Do use it regularly so that it stays rustfree and also builds non-stick layer with the regular seasoning.

A free lunch program is a federal money program. So you can't blame that on the state. Also to be said is that the free lunch program has been taken over by commercial food companies so the wholesome lunches that you may remember from your days in the school lunches. So the meals now resemble grilled cheese sandwiches in a plastic bag that doesn't even need refrigeration -- not real cheese. Foods are full of carbs (sugar) and chemicals.

So far, our schools do still serve nutritious meals…with fresh fruits and vegetables and the cooks spending hours in the kitchen preparing the main dish. so it may not be under the same program? I’m not sure. ❤️

Not true, in Minnesota a bill was passed and signed into law by the governor of the state which ensured free school meals for kids across the board. It is state funded and works in tandem with the national program.
