One thing that really helped me is the rule: if there's no space for it, you can't buy more of it! So if my daughters clothing drawer is full, some needs to be donated that is too small before we buy more! If the pasta section of the pantry is full, I don't get to buy more pasta! I designate spaces for things and once the space is full, that's it! Same with toys. We have an open toy shelf my daughter can take from and a closed one for out of rotation toys, and if its full then we don't get any more toys until something is donated or sold! It works so well because we save money on impulse purchases, its totally teachable to our daughter, and we aren't overflowing with stuff all the time. This one rule was such a gamechanger for me.

You really have kick started my decluttering of my house! I grew up with clutter everywhere...and I mean EVERYWHERE! Shelves, cabinets, tchotchkes, collectibles...you name it, my mom had it sitting out for all to see! I thought it was “normal”. The older I got, the more I saw it was NOT normal. I wanted clean and organized , but had no idea how. I found Marie Kondo first, but your method is more realistic and attainable. I’m 48 yrs old and you given me the tools that I need to get it DONE!!! Thanks Dawn and Tom!!!

Just a while ago I started getting the kids to put away their own laundry and I was at a point where I said, I don;t care if its not folded, just put it in the right drawer and that will be fine. I love it because they can now independently put away their clothes and I am not stressed if its not folded.

I definitely agree with keeping the lids on the food storage containers. I recently got glass containers that came with lids, and I always store them with the lids on. Maybe it’s because they’re more expensive than plastic ones, so I care more about keeping them in order, but it makes finding the whole container much easier to use and store. (Plus you can pop glass right into the microwave.)

Also, being a stay at home/homeschooling housewife, I whittled down my clothing to 6 "winter" outfits and 6 "summer" outfits. Each outfit is on a hanger. I was thinking that too. We haveso much food caught in the vicious cycle of... cook, put in fridge to save, cook more, keep puting in fridge, trash day! Throw all out, feel ashamed for wasting the food (not to mention everytime I open the fridge and see them all) and now wash all the containers. I think I'll try this too. Hopefully we'll eat more leftovers.

Love your relaxed attitude with the children, and I'm sure it contributes to peace in the family, while at the same time everything has a place. Your ideas are great and even though I am much older, I am thrilled that you have solutions to things that I had not come up with. I am going through a complete inventory of 2 houses at the moment...(don't ask) and also dealing with belongings from my mom when she passed. It is making me sure that I do not wish to burden my daughter or husband with all my clutter if I should depart first. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe again. I have many miles to go, but I'm looking at it as as an adventure, and I know there are many hidden treasures in the midst of so much clutter. But this time I am keeping only the things that bring me joy or are of use. I look forward to a new kind of freedom, and you make me feel like I can do it. So thanks again.

I do that too! After spending a lot of time straightening out my linen closet so that I could easily store and grab things, such as different size sheets sets, I knew I would never remember the set up when I went to put stuff away again so I labelled the shelves. My friends all thought I was loonie but it really works. Especially helpful when your in-laws visit from out of town for a month or two. 4 or 5 years in now and it still works.

Thnx for the tips. I'm late to this show, but have a few tips for humid climates that your future readers may find helpful. In Florida it is so humid, even in air conditioning, that the inside of containers will start to smell if they are closed up. So I don't do that. But I do have a tip for large storage containers that store holiday decorations, to keep them from getting musty smelling: Take a clean small plastic container, make several holes in the top with the end of a corkscrew. Put clay cat litter in the bottom layer and add Damp Rid pellets as a top layer, seal and enclose in the box, holes facing up. In a year when you reopen the box it will not smell, but the silicone/litter mixture will be soggy with moisture it wicked from the air in the container. Dispose contents in trash, wipe out container with a used napkin or paper towel (why make more waste), and refill when you store everything again.

I read that tip of using slide-out bins some years ago, and it's been a lifesaver -- turns your shelves into drawers! Good tips!

Thank you for the storage containers method. I've been doing this for years and have felt like a crazy person, but once you do it, you wont go back. Gone are the days of searching for a damn lid!

Good Intentions me too. Found some long boxes at Sam’s that Im using. The sides are not tall so it’s like having a shallow drawer for pots and pans . Great ideas

OMG the plastic ware was falling out of my cabinet this very morning when I was trying to put my lunch together. I'm definitely going to try storing them this way over the weekend. Thanks for sharing!

I love the DVD storage concept! You’ve really made me think about the whole TV time thing. In my house we spend way too much time in front of the tube. I’m going to try to get rid the subscriptions and just watch DVDs. Thanks for the great info

We don’t do any electronics through the week, only the weekends. And a family friend does no electronics on Sundays. Either way, it’s great to limit and reset

I totally agree with storage furniture encouraging clutter! Im using my bookcase as a way to store my clothes. And my actual dresser I’m selling because it’s too big and was accumulating extra clutter. Slowly downsizing all my stuff. Thanks for the tips!

You inspired me to clear away my kitchen counters this spring. I now keep my toaster in a bin in a lower cupboard. Turns out I rarely make toast and I love all that free space on my counter. Small wins! Thx

Thank you Dawn. It certainly inspires me to get there too. Too much stuff gets so overwhelming for me. I’ve remarried 7 years ago owned and managed 2 homes and lived between both. My adult children with disabilities still lived at my home so it was a lot to manage. Then built new home. Sold one house and decluttering for 2 years with my husband’s house then my home of 30 yrs. So no longer owning a 4 bedroom large home then selling another 3 bedroom fully furnished basement. I’ve done so much decluttering, reorganizing, donating, giving friends stuff plus my kids new apartments. I think I’m getting there but have burnt out. It’s a NEW YEAR so hopefully I can get inspired. Thanks

My kids (2 and 5) have started not folding except the very nice clothes and hanging the ones we hang up. My 5yo explained to me how "it's okMom, they wont wrinkle too bad" haha. It's a fuss every week to do this part of their chores and we miss out on so much. Does not teaching them to fold anymore hinder their ability to learn a special skill? If not, then I'm ditching it too from now on.

Hey there, Dawn. Love all your stuff. Have you done a video on storing gift wrap? I'm a professional organizer & this is an area where I see lots of people struggle. Personally, I can't think of a bigger waste of space & I believe the world would benefit from hearing your take.
