Thank you, gentlemen. It has been a pleasure listening to this episode. I had many good laughters on Scott's perspective and impression he took home from Bavaria, me as a host and teacher and from our wonderful trip to Monte. Jon, I am pretty sure I will not just drop diapers and a paper note, hahaha. Next year will be calm when it comes to travelling, but yeah we will see. Thanks for your open and honest talks. I went in full through the podcast and had a great time!

As someone who lives in Germany (Berlin, but have been to Bavaria several times) it was super funny how you celebrated the brezels-with-butter-thing 😀 Nice to hear you had a good time over here. If you happen to come to Berlin some day I am sure here are some hobby enthusiasts who would love to show you our Berlin culture and how things are here compared to the bavarian region. :)

Ex-GW-staffer here. Usually when there's a "recall" of product and they've already shipped it to the US or AUS etc it'll go to landfill. Someone probably did some checks and realises the plastic wasn't forming properly that on previous checks had been missed. Could be any other aspect of the product though if the mistake is bad enough, so printing on instructions, cards etc can cause a "recall". I saved the company alot of money from fault finding before shipping

A recommendation for Scott, Zona Alfa can be played coop! It's a very simple system to learn, you just need to make sure your crews are from factions that are allied or neutral to each other, best thing is each of your crews has a different end goal that you end up deciding on. It's miniature agnostic too which is really fun for making your crew actually feel like they're your own, I use Hero Forge for it quite a bit. Uncle Atom has a video about it if you're interested :)

Really great that Scott got out to another kind of painting competition. While the Games Workshop system is an important aspect of the hobby, its predominate style is merely one approach to the art of miniature painting. At this stage, its slavish attachment to just one style is, in my opinion, greatly holding back the advancement of the art form.

If you want a blast of nostalgia and a fun beer n' pretzels casual campaign, the relaunch of Hero Quest is a less involved version of Descent, fun minis, a campaign that's not too in depth, and enough failed dice rolls to keep you on your toes. It might be too silly or too easy in concept for some, but if you just wanna move some minis and roll some dice without getting to in the weeds with something like Descent, it's a solid choice

For awesome co-op board games, I recommend all of Pandemic Legacy. They're fun, challenging, and the story that unfolds is really interesting. Also, if you like Dune Imperium, the same designer created a line of games called Clank! that are great. I'm a little biased because I also worked on those games, but Clank! Legacy is a really fun game. It's not exactly cooperative, but it does have some semi-cooperative elements within the story, and the gameplay is really engaging.

For a Boardgame that tops every other boardgame for me i would recommend "Shadows of Brimstone" You can go with the standard Wild West or the Feudal Japan Variant (Games and Expansions are fully compatible) The Minis are ranging from "okay" to "great". its 1-6 Players if you take both Wild West Core Games (City of the Ancient + Swamps of Death) or The Japanese one (Forbidden Fortress +Temple of Shadows) You can choose from different classes with different level up paths and find new and cool items and artifacts as you explore mundane and otherworlds. It has a bit of a Cthulhu vibe with the creatures you fight. I can only recommend it

Gloomhaven is exactly the game you are looking for Scott. There are very few parts that involve much "roleplaying" that would be considered DND like at all. The overall gameplay is very strong with a myriad of special classes that allows players to alter things to match their and the group's strategy. After playing 2 different campaigns, it's definitely my highest recommendation.

Good cooperative game options: Gloomhaven Oathsworn Zombicide Burncycle Massive Darkness 2(But I would recommend some house rules to make the game harder) Roll Player Adventures Sleeping Gods(Good character management, good combat puzzles, great storytelling, great exploration) combat is about 15-20% of the game Spirit Island(not a dungeon crawler or campaign game but a really great cooperative game) Sword & Sorcery: Ancient chronicles(BTH I haven't played this one yet, but have heard it is pretty good and hard enough to really require cooperation) Games you should probably avoid: Bardsung(If you thought Isofarian Guard was grindy, Bardsung is moreso) Star Wars Imperial Assault(Many of the same simplistic systems as Descent, but with a star wars theme. However you can play this with 1 player playing against the rest as the Empire)

The single best cooperative boardgame (imo) is Arkham Horror: The card game. No minis though. Imperial Assault is also very good and is an improvement on Descent 2.0. If you go with Gloomhaven then go with Jaws of the Lion. It does the best rules intro with the first 5 scenarios gradually introducing new rules and abilities so you don't get overwhelmed. I'm also enjoying the Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corp (with the 'Get away from her you b***H!' expansion to flesh out the campaign).

So yes, Gloomhaven/Frosthaven, Gloomhaven 2.0 or whatever. How important is the campaign? Like Mansions of Madness don't have a camapign, although they usually do have a connected theme, and that is Journeys in Middle-Earth with dice. And horror. Forgotten Waters have an unfolding story but nothing that carries over too, I quite liked that. Does it have to have miniatures? Wait, crud, Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion of course. Play that first, and if you enjoy that you move onto Gloomhaven and Frosthaven. It ramps it up so you learn as you play and adds thing scenario by scenario, with 4 players it took us 26 plays to go through it with an average playtime of 1 hour 58 minutes, that usually includes some set up too. And if someone wants to use the cool looking archer from Cursed City in a game where she rocks, then Rangers of Shadowdeep as mentioned here already is a great fit, I used her for my main hero when we played through it with 4 people. But that is for sure more RPG-Miniature dungeon crawl than board game with things more adjustable and less 'rigid', but I will never not champion that game.

They have been releasing boxes lately that is basically the first, second and third books to play through as a campaign. Aeon's End Legacy, Detective, the Pandemic Legacy games and so on. :D

It is curious to hear Kingmaker described as beloved, even in such a small hobby as RPGs you can have different sections and never may they cross, most I know who played it, or the reviews I've seen, gave up after the first of six books. :) Of course, the computer game kind of rebooted it and I would suspect they have taken the best parts of that if you are running the new PF2 print.
@Cowgirlsteve26
10 ай бұрын
Kingmaker is definitely a very group dependent adventure path, and there were huge sections of the original version that weren't well written. The 2e update and bits from the PC game has definitely helped, and if the game has a good DM and a group that enjoys a sandbox it can be absolutely fantastic. But I've got a group that basically only ever wants to dungeon crawl and a sandbox gives them analysis paralysis, so my group would quit pretty early only I'm sure lol

Gloomhaven has some really good character advancement, and the mechanics of the gameplay is really great. The combat is good with good puzzle solving action action/hand management. The downsides of gloomhaven are a really disjointed story that is not engaging, and the length of the campaign. To just complete the campaign, you are looking at 25-30 (3-4 hour) sessions. But if you want to wander around to complete objectives or explore different story outcomes you are looking at 50-100 missions. Comparing it to D&D, Gloomhaven has better combat on average, but definitely not the freedom to do whatever you want or go wherever you want that D&D has. Also Gloomhaven is 95% combat.
