This is amazing! Thank you for going into so much detail, and as some other people here mentioned, for making it easy to understand, and helping us eat the elephant one bite at a time. I'm watching from Singapore, but am Australian, a few years ago my wife and I took a year off and travelled around Australia in a car, and it was amazing. Eric: It seems to me that you should also have a fuse between the battery positive and the MPPT controller and another fuse between the battery positive and the inverter. Sized at the lesser of the wire ampacity or the maximum allowed current draw of the device.
@ericenjoysearth2756
Жыл бұрын
Hello Greg, Each manufacturer will have added different protection to their components. As mention in the video, each one should read the manufacturer’s instructions manual to learn about their equipment and how to properly install it, and in the proper order. In my case it is not an obligation of the manufacturer’s. My optimized system is pretty light. It works with only a 20 amp controller, only a 700 watts inverter with only a 100 watts solar panel. There’s no limit to how many fuses that one may want to had to its system. Each haded junction will had surface contact that comes with some resistivity… Plus, as said in my video, what I show is for informative purpose only. Each components that someone buys may be less protected and of less quality… Instructions will be different… ✌️

Have a single large fuse directly connected and physically close to the battery. If, for any reason (rubbing wires, etc.), you have a short circuit, this is your ultimate protection against a fire in your car.

Hello @Eric, I watched your video and could see that on the inverter you did the right decision: You chose one with a pure sinus output. Unfortunately you did not mention this fact. People who are new to this topic will often buy a cheap inverter without pure sinus, which can damage some devices.

Hi Eric, beautiful videos. You've given me so many great ideas but I was still wondering how you got the solar cables inside without drilling a hole?

Well done, Eric. I'll be looking for your sequel videos on your electrical system. One note: I'm surprised your entire DC electrical load is distributed THRU your MPPT Controller. I hope Renogy built in good protection for that. Also, I wonder what AC services you use beyond the computer and small device charging. No microwave in the van, correct?

So far, Renogy is doing a great job. I am satisfied. No microwave cooking for me. In fact I don't use AC power other than for PC. Power conversion is less than optimal... ✌️

Hi Eric. Great video. Always excited when you post. What do you think of portable power stations instead of building the parts (e.g. mppt, inverter, batteries). I even saw Jackery at Costco last week.

This is a good video suggestion. I will give you a clue… If I had to do it again, I would do it the same way! I will explain why… Thank you Gary for your appreciation 😃✌️

Hi Eric. I’m planning my first van conversion and your videos have been super helpful. As a fellow Canadian I was wondering if you have had any issues crossing into USA with a converted van and if you have any tips about that. Maybe enough for a short video 🤷♀️ Thanks and happy travels … Laurel

I am glad to be of any help in your project! 😃 No issues crossing borders. For the solar shower I do recommend screwed cap as explained in my video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/yaaMk6CGbaR_mm0si=LNkSU1AXPImrHGJV Enjoy realizing your project, you will never regret this! So much fun to travel this way!!! 😃✌️

Hey Eric. Love your videos! Do you recommend a FWD sienna over an AWD sienna? Also have you ever considered lifting you sienna for extra ground clearance?
@ericenjoysearth2756

FWD and I am very happy with it, and I am a canadien who deals with canadien winters. If you stay on main roads, the weight of the van and size of the tires make it so that there is no need for a AWD. Same thing for the suspension. Having a low one is an advantage for going in and out of the van, and having access to the roof box. Thank you for your appreciation! 😃✌️

Hello! I've been enjoying your videos. Thanks in advance. Now, hands to the matter: How do you cook inside the van? I've been thinking about a stealth van viable for cities, and so I've thought about making your bed the same way but also be able to move it in the other direction, with the idea of fitting a sitting shower at the back. But the question that bothers me the most is: how confortable is it to cook inside the van? I've seen a lot of people cooking inside, but none of them talk about oil in the ceiling or ventilation for the evaporated water... Thanks again and see you on the road :)

Hi Eric! Thanks for the video. Have you ever drained the batteries when you have many cloudy days in a row? Is 100W of solar always enough to run your fridge/lights/fan?

I am confused about your battery (timestamp 3'00") You have a red battery, and two black ones? is the red the main and the other two backups? Or do the three together (wired in parallel) make one "higher capacity" battery? Also, how many amp hours of battery do you have? Finally at time 3'00 I see that you put the black ones under your bed. Where is the red one? Love your videos. I am a long time subscriber.

Eric - how reliable have you found this system overall? Has there ever been an unexpected failure that has caused the cabin to take on extreme weather? I have two dogs that I am planning on an extended trip. I think this is likely the solution to AC issues along with a WiFi temp monitor when I have to be away from my vehicle for a couple hours. I will use your insulation system too. So if a catastrophic failure temperature will not go severe. thank you for all your videos

Eric if you were doing a van conversion now would you use a portable Lion Po4 battery instead of permanent install ? I would and I'm an electrical engineer that has worked on renewables for over 30 years so am familiar with DC wiring. It reduces complexity has "enough" power for me and fit perfectly with the rest of your concept of low mod removal build. The way you have done your van with the exception of the wiring is the way I would do it. The renewable design theory is to reduce power usage and simplify for reliability much like Colin Chapmans Lotus concept of simplify and "add lightness"
