Maybe try around Jay Cooke State Park near Duluth. The Basalt bedrock there has veins of quarts with gold. Some years ago we brought back some sand southwest of the Pickled Crow gold mine. The shoreline glittered. We never hand anyone pan our samples.

You should look into getting a quarter inch Arbor fabricating classifier they fit deeper into a bucket and hold a few good shovel fulls, and wash the material much better and really help break up the majority of any clay.

You need to get yourself some water shoes I use to be like you and one day while fishing a rock halfway ripped my big toenail off. If got badly infected and I had to rip it off all the way it was like 6 months or more for it to grow back. Was not a good time.
