In September 2024, VENT will debut a brand-new tour, Migratory Gems of Hawk Ridge and Western Lake Superior, which explores the diverse and exciting bird migration that takes place throughout Minnesota’s Northwoods and Lake Superior shoreline. Fall-accented boreal scenery complements our daily excursions. The morning hours offer opportunities for witnessing and studying passerine flight along the surrounding shoreline, with gulls and shorebirds nearby, and the possibility of uncommon jaegers as well. The timing of this tour coincides with a significant window of raptor migration, for both diversity and sheer numbers of birds. The scenic vista of Hawk Ridge will be visited and enjoyed several times, as we scan the skies for migrating raptors from this premier hawkwatching spot. One of the days will be dedicated to exploring the legendary hotspot Sax-Zim Bog. Among the many resident and migrating birds, there is a chance to see the uncommon Great Gray Owl. On a select night of the tour we’ll revisit Hawk Ridge after dark to have a chance to see Northern Saw-whet Owl banding in action. Our one hotel for the tour is comfortably nestled right on the beautiful Lake Superior shoreline, with our guest rooms offering a lake-facing view. The dining scene in Duluth is renowned, and we’ll be savoring a taste of the area at the nicest restaurants in town. Join VENT tour leader Erik Bruhnke as he shines a spotlight on this new tour that really is a treat to the senses!
