I would STRONGLY recomend students to MEMORIZE ALL Major and minor keys long before they begin playing in these keys. This is BASIC knowledge of music, just like knowing the letters for clefs and the keyboard itself, and note and rest values. Reguarding the sound quality of Major and minor, I ask, How the does this make you feel?, or, What does this remind you of?, etc. I want the students to come up with their own words to better understand what they hear. What is "Happy" for me, may be "sad" for you. What matters is that the students know the sound quality of what they are hearing.

Yes! When I'm teaching in-person lessons, where I can customize and personalize, I completely agree with your take. "Happy" and "Sad" are very general, and minor pieces can definitely sound happy (hello, Vivaldi Concertos in minor keys 😃). But as a bite-sized theory video on minor key signatures, I think "Happy" and "Sad" work just fine.

I learned all my major and minor keys early on. I'm still working on level one method books, but I was never musical. I practice going around the circle of fifths with certain techniques, and going around in minor keys is not easy. I have to concentrate.

Going around the circle of fifths is so satisfying.

Thank you for the video. At which point do you feel beginners should be working more extensively on minor scales? My major scales are all able to be fingered and visualized and read (key signatures). I'm currently starting book 2 of Alfred's adult piano book

I would focus on getting all your major scales in 2 octaves at a moderate tempo 1st (something like 80 BPM for the quarter note and playing in quarters). If you are already there, then begin minor scales. Begin with the ones that share fingering with C major (a, e, b, d, g, and c minor).

Thanks Susan. Now I see why I rely on the Circle of 5ths so much. lol

Thankyou for sharing the cheat sheet, it’s going to be a really valuable resource. It’s very much more than just scales. I particularly like all the chord, cadence and mode content, which I will be referring to regularly. ❤
