Back in June we went to the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site which is an American national historic site established in 1999 near Wall, South Dakota. It was built to illustrate the history and significance of the Cold War, the nuclear arms race, and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) development. The site preserves the last intact Minuteman II ICBM system in the United States, in a disarmed and demilitarized status. A Guided tour is available of the underground Launch Control Center but we didn’t have advance tickets so we missed it, but we did get to D09 which is a missile silo that can be observed from above. Some 450 of the newer Minuteman III missiles are still on active duty at Malmstrom AFB, Montana, Minot AFB, North Dakota, and F. E. Warren AFB, Wyoming.
Touring the museum, you become keenly aware of how many “near disasters” there have been around nuclear weapons. If you are interested in how often they occur, go to “Nuclear close calls” on Wikipedia, the 1960’s were a hotbed of near disasters.
