In the latter half of the 1960s, Minzoto Ya Zaire (and its successors) was helped start by Jef De Laet, a Belgian Scheutist, in Lipopo. Father Jef quickly became known as 'Pere Buffalo' through his work of channeling youth energies into a positive and more organized movement, following the example of the Flemish 'Catholic Worker Youth'. he also launches The Stars of Zaire, as well as a cultural centre, Cabaret Liyoto, which featured a recording studio.
The Minzoto sound is much different from the Congolese 'rumba' most people know. There's much inspiration and borrowing from folklore, traditional music, and reworkings of religious hymns.
Here a song mixes rumba and funk rhythms sung in Lingala.
Lingala it is spoken in the western and northern Democratic Republic of the Congo (including its capital Kinshasa), in the central and northern Republic of the Congo (including its capital Brazzaville), in northern Angola, and among members of the Congolese and Angolan diaspora in mainly Europe, Canada, and South Africa. In all these locations it continues to acquire new adult speakers as well as native speakers.
