The power of this speech lies in the fact that it is not just about hockey players or sports in general. Anyone with a dream can use it. I watched this in my first year of nursing school when my dean contacted me to tell me I was failing and on academic probation and suggested I drop out, work as a nursing assistant to gain clinical experience, and return the following year. I usually quit prematurely to avoid failure when the chances were against me. But I remembered this speech from childhood and pulled up this clip to watch. I made the decision to fight back then and there because I wanted to be a nurse and I had the chance to do so. I refused to give up and wait another year. I ignored my dean, my parents, my friends, and everyone else who doubted me because it wasn’t up to them to tell me how to live my life. Today, I have worked as a nurse for 5 years and am extremely grateful to be in this position. I hope this speech touches all of you in the same way to reach your goals and dreams ❤

Subtle thing, but brilliantly done. The best line of the speech - "Tonight we skate with them, we stay with them, and we shut them down because WE CAN" is followed by a reaction shot of the goalkeeper listening intently. History shows us Jim Craig proceeded to go out and play the game of his life. Stopping 36 of 39 shots on goal from the best hockey team in the world.

Man if I was in that locker room and heard that I'd knock the doors down and PLASTER every Russian player I could on the boards---I'd lay some forechecks on em' they'd remember for the rest of their LIVES LOL!!

It's the greatest upset in the history of organized sports. The entire story is David v. Goliath, Good v. Evil, the college kids thrown together for 8 or 9 months, the Red Army team who had played together for over a decade, the old school college coach tasked with whipping the raw talent into a "Team", the hardcore Viktor Tikanov who only had to think of a plan for his team to make it so, the American Boycott of the summer games in Russian because of the Afghanistan invasion, the Iranian hostage crisis, the Cold War, the malaise the country was in as Carter put it with gas lines and and an economy in inflation hell, the two teams playing the week before at Madison Square Garden where the Russians annihilated the young US squad 10-3 (I think) and most said it wasn't even that close, to finally meeting when it counted at tiny Lake Placid in the United States. A chance for the Soviets to crush the Americans at home and become larger than life around the world politically. Brooks sheltered the team from all the political buzz and made it about uniting as a team and playing a hockey game. By the time they got to the game, the game everyone on the planet knew that's was coming, the American team of young college kids were champing at the bit to play but for all the right reasons. They were young and arrogant in the way young kids good at what they do are arrogant. They had short memories from the previous week's shellacking by the Russians, and zero political pressure thanks to Brooks then he addresses the team for a little over two minutes and gives the best motivational speech you can give 20 year old hockey players. "All that matters is what you do tonight. You're here for a reason, because you deserve to be. You're better than them. All you have to do is be the team you know that you are. Now go out there and take it!" The team is amped up and get a couple of goals from Mark Johnson. The second of which gets in right before the end of a period to tie the game. The Soviet coach loses his nerve early and inexplicably pulls his goalie, showing his team that after all they've been through together, a couple of soft goals was ok it took for him to lose confidence in them. I don't care how hardcore those guys were, the coach really sandbagged psychologically with that move. Then middle of the third at 3-3 and Rizzo, team Captain, a guy that barely made the team, puts the Americans ahead with a lot of time left. The Americans then go into a grinding, forechecking style that would've made the teams of the Norris Division jealous in an attempt to preserve the win and then at just around a minute Al Michaels in his mind knows this things is over and starts getting more and more excited. Then after calling 5 seconds to go, do you believe in miracles YES!!! Ken Dryden is doing color and after Michaels calls five seconds to go Dryden says "it's over!" Then Michaels says "Do you believe in Miracles...YES!!!! Then Dryden says "Unbelievable!" Then pandemonium. The teams still had to play Finland for the gold. After starting sluggishly they ended up winning and taking the gold. When it was time for the medals, the captains were the only ones on the podiums and I believe after the anthems Rizzo motioned for the entire team to come up and stand with him on top of the hockey and Olympic world for another iconic scene. The next issue of Sports Illustrated had the boys celebrating after beating Russians on the cover which had no words. Later in those games Eric Heiden would claim 5 gold medals in speed skating. This was meant to be. There's no other way it could've happened. It was destiny. Brooks was prophetic, "if we played them 10 ten times they'd probably take 9...but not tonight. Tonight you are the greatest hockey terms in the world." As far as the game and the context in which it was played, there will never be another like it. There can't be. It was a vehicle that moved our country through a particular rough spot in history. And from what has transpired in the last 4 years, we cannot even rely on what the truth of our history is. But this was real. It's a reference point in history we can point to and say with certainty that it happened. Putting the game into its place with the aforementioned supporting cast of events proves it couldn't be faked. And it kicked off what would come to be the greatest decade in human history.

He acknowledged they were an inferior team. If we played em 10 times they might win 9. But in doing so he inspired them to perform to the opponent's level. Not this game...not this night. He was the leader of an amazing group of men that accomplished something that most thought was impossible. And 40 years later it still seems improbable. God Speed Herb Brooks. An American legend.

Great moments are born from great opportunity and that’s what you have here tonight, boys. That’s what you’ve earned here tonight. One game. If we played them ten times they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight we skate with them. Tonight we stay with them and we shut them down because we can. Tonight we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players every one of you. You were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It’s over. I’m sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw ‘em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it.
