My mother is Dutch, born in Amsterdam. I sent this clip to her a few years ago, and she could sing along. She thanked me greatly. Last year she had a major left side stroke, and can no longer talk. I wish I could be there with her, and perhaps show her this clip again. Life can be cruel. I watch this lovely clip and think only of her.

For those wondering what Santa/"sinterklaas" (as he's known in netherlands) was asking the girl, this is a rough translation - Santa: What would you like for christmas from Santa Claus? Little Dutch girl: Nothing Santa Claus, I don't need any presents, I have a mom and dad now!"
@jimmo42

' "sinterklaas" (as he's known in Germany)' Uh no. In Germany he is known primarily as "Der Weihnachtsmann". (The Christmas Man) or "Sankt Nikolaus" (St. Nicholas). Perhaps very close to the border there might be some overlap but "sinterklaas" is definitely Dutch, not German.

That is just a small portion. This is their whole conversation (from a comment on this video kzitem.info/news/bejne/yph6qmyPbHt7pZw): Santa: I'm happy that you came to visit me. Dutch girl: You really are sinterklaas (sinterklaas: A Dutch tradition where santa claus is based on). Santa: I sure am. Dutch girl: I knew you would understand. Santa: Of course. You can tell me what ever you want from Sinterklass. Dutch girl: I want nothing. I already got a lot of things. The only thing I want is to be with this lovely lady. Germany's bombing of Rotterdam was a deliberate effort to terrorize the Dutch into surrender that killed 1150 civilians and destroyed the city. Utrecht was next. Of course, none of these bombings would have happened if the Nazis hadn't invaded in the first place. In any event, "Rotterdam" would have had only one meaning back then.

With great expectation, I had ordered the dvd of this "little" gem last December on-line, after hearing Quentin Tarantino's confession on a Dutch movieprogram called "Films en Sterren", that he preferred "Miracle on 34th Street" over that other Christmas classic: (which is my personal favourite) "It's A Wonderful Life". And I must admit that, after having watched "Miracle On 34th Street" for the first(!) time, it's undeniably a very enjoyable picture indeed. With an outstanding performance from Edmund Gwenn (Academy Award for Best Supporting Role; and rightly so!) as probably the kindest and most endearing Santa Claus you could ever hope to meet, the one and only: Kris Kringles! And yes, I also was quite surprised to hear a snippet of my native language in a mainstream American film, which could be considered as maybe "too foreign" for that time. But in the end, I'm more than glad that writer Valentine Davies (Academy Award for Best Writing Original Story) and Director George Seaton (Academy Award for Best Writing Screenplay) both had enough "Dutch Courage", to turn "Miracle On 34th Street" into the second best Christmas Movie Classic of All Time...

@KeiFox

Aside from how touching it is to see Mr. Kringle speak to the little Dutch girl, it's equally heartfelt in how the mother can only smile and shake her head in joyous disbelief of how it's too good to be true; that Mr. Kringle really is Santa Claus/Sinterklass. Really helped to set the stage further for little Susan Walker having doubts about her upbringing of fantasies. Intriguing how soon thereafter we see the crux of the whole mindset due to Doris Walker once having fantasies regarding her ex-husband as being the cause of her cynicism and embittered perspective of the world.

I've always held 34th street above It's A Wonderful Life as our greatest Christmas classic, basically because there is no supernatural aspect to the story - as a child, I watched the move thinking well of course he's Santa Clause, it's just that the stupid grown ups can't see it, but as an adult, I realize it never mattered whether he was or wasn't the 'real' Santa Claus, his humanity and kindness was what really counted - no miracles, angels or time travel needed, a timeless message, I've seen it a hundred times, and I never tire of it....
@mkeogh76

Agreed. It's a big reason why I do NOT like the '94 remake. In the '94, he really is Santa- the supernatural being. In the '47, it's left entirely open whether he is or not. He could be just a very kindly, old man with a harmless delusion and a very smart and lucky lawyer. That's why I think the original is a smarter and less childish film than the '94 version.

Santa Claus is in fact Saint Nicholas, and Saint Nicholas is in fact Santa Clause. Santa Claus is a name created in America for Saint Nicholas. The name Santa Claus evolved from Nick’s Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas). English speaking New Yorker's heard the Dutch immigrant people say Sinter Klaas, but when they tried to repeat it they pronounced it Santa Claus, thereby pinning a new American name on Saint Nicholas. @@TippyPuddles I don't know who you mean by "we," but there ARE plenty of people who go much farther than that; people who support this administration's actions in drastically cutting the number of LEGAL refugees who are admitted. If you think that it is easy or even possible to adopt a war orphan from a refugee camp in, say, Jordan, and bring that child to the United States, you've got another think coming. This administration has made that all but impossible. It is thus exactly "her type" that this administration wants to keep out: unaccompanied minor children. And don't forget the so-called "dreamers" who came or were brought here as children, when they were incapable of knowing or understanding the laws, or of refusing to come. Is a person child brought here at two or three years of age, who has lived here for 20 or 30 years without a problem, and perhaps even served in our military, a "low life crook"? Because people like that are being deported by this administration EVERY DAY. If you are only interested in keeping out, or sending back, people actually guilty of crimes (other than fleeing for their lives from conditions we can scarce imagine), then I am with you; but that is not the policy of this administration.

I disagree, what makes this scene unique is the moment in time. The 1947 audience would immediately recognize the girl as an orphan war refugee, devastated by the loss of her entire family. The audience would bring their own experiences of war tragedy to this scene. In the 1990s version we feel a sense of compassion for a deaf girl, but the individual viewer's suffering, like shared WWII suffering, is not present. Appreciating the 1947 scene requires an extra step of context and an understanding of unfathomable war devastation. Contemporary audiences may not have the emotional and moral resources to experience that kind of historical empathy.

The little "Dutch" girl was American actress Marlene Lyden (1939-2007). Translation gleaned from elsewhere on KZitem: Hello, I'm glad you came. (Hallo, ik ben blij dat je gekomen bent.) Oh, you are Sinterklaas! (Oh, u bént Sinterklaas.) Oh, yes. (Ah, jazeker.) I knew it. I was sure you would understand. (Ik wist het wel. Ik was zeker dat u het zou begrijpen.) Naturally. Just tell us what you would like from Sinterklaas. (Natuurlijk. Zeg maar wat je zou willen hebben van Sinterklaas.) Nothing. I have everything. I just want to be with this sweet lady. (Niets. Ik heb vanalles. Ik wil alleen maar bij deze lieve dame zijn.) Would you like to sing something for me? (Wil je wat voor mij zingen?) Little Sinterklaas (Sinterklaas Kapoentje) Give something in my shoe (geef wat in mijn schoentje) Give something in my boot (geef wat in mijn laarsje) Thank you Sinterklaasje. (Dank u Sinterklaasje) (The Dutch word "Kapoentje" is necessary to make this song rhyme. Lesser known fact is that it literally means "castrated rooster", maybe it fits because some traditions say that Sinterklaas was a celibate bishop).

Possibly. But by the adopting mom explaining that she got the little girl from an orphanage because her parents were murdered and then the little girl saying she didnot want anything for xmas because she had this lady (her new mom), it put a lot of emotion in the scene. But you might be right also.

He'd better speak Turkish too...after all the 1994 movie says that the original St. Nicholas was from "Asia Minor" (now known as Turkey)...though the Church in fact did not "single out" St. Nicholas from that whole downgrading thing, it was him and I think 70ish other saints.

Rob Tro agree on the colorization. Wasn't it Ted Turner that started the color crap? I was always partial to the '38 Reginald Owen version. Don't think they ever ruined that with color. Check it out.
