naqsh fariyādī hai kis kī shoḳhi-e-tahrīr kā
kāġhzī hai pairahan har paikar-e-tasvīr kā
Notes and References:
Mirza Ghalib and others have said that the 'kāġhzī pairahan' is a reference to an old custom in Iran where seekers of justice would put on garments made of paper while going before the ruler. Those garments indicated that they have a complaint. Many people have said that they have been to Iran and never saw or heard of a custom like that. So the custom is debatable. That is the reason I decided to not talk about it. I think the sher can still be understood and enjoyed, without worrying about that custom. ‘Kaghzi pairahan’ is a reference to the notional, fictional or delicate nature of the naqsh, painting or the creation. If you do take the custom into account, it just reinforces the idea that a fariyad (complaint) is being made in the sher.
In the video I said “Heer Waris Shah ne”. I should have said - Waris Shah ne Heer mein, yaan Heer Waris Shah mein.
