Just picked up a used newco machine similar to this bunn, replacing parts minimally, as i found something caused the tank lid to bulge upwards from the tank, deforming the tank studs and tank as well. I opted to replace the lid, hoping to flatten the slight twists out of the tank lip. Thanks for uploading! Good to see someone else tinkering 👍

You never once checked the temperature of the water in the tank? The water should be about 200 degrees F. Coffee experts say 195 to 205. If the water is not the correct temperature, you can't make good coffee. You said early on that the water was "boiling", but you don't seem to know that. You most certainly heard water heating in the water tank, but you can't know that the water was boiling. I didn't notice any steam being boiled off, either from the tank, or from the bowl. That would have been almost the first thing that I checked, before diddling with the dial thermostat.
