I loved the Miss America pageant. I was 18 when Kaye Lani rocked her talent. A truly mesmerizing and unforgettable performance. She was my pick to win too.

Thanks for posting this! I was 7 when this aired and have always remembered this performance as being so different and exciting for the Miss America pageant. Haven't seen it since, but my mom and I have fondly recalled it over the years. I have little idea how technically accurate this dancing is, but it sure was fun to watch! Give me this any day over the "standard talents" such as singing and modern dance. And that color of hot pink just fit the times perfectly! Love it! Good memories.

Most memorable MA talent performance ever! Pure joy from an era when fun was still being encouraged and appreciated.

A judge from that years MAP stated that what made the difference was the interview segment. The judge in question stated that Kaye Lani was the clear winner in this segment of the competition. No one was within 5 points of her according to the judge. This undoubtedly made the difference.

That shows how intelligent she is. In addition to all her other attributes. She was the only one who gave a coherent and purposful statement in the introductions. Most of the others were sappy and sickening.
I LOVED her talent!!! I wanna learn how to do that so bad!

One of Miss Rafko's pageantmates (and later courtmates) was Toni Seawright, who became the first African-American to win Miss Mississippi. (She placed fifth, I believe, but went on to a very significant career).

I was working the night my high school friend won Miss America 1988. Kaye Lani and I were volunteers together at the local hospital in Monroe, MI. We both became R.N.'s and that night my patients kept me informed as to the progress of the pageant. I remember the excitement of her winning!!!!! Luv ya, KLR!!!!!!!

I was working backstage as a Miss America volunteer the week Kai Lani competed. She was outgoing and kind to everyone. She literally handed me her uneaten M&M’s as she went on stage to do her talent. She was so cooly confident, but in a very nice way. I was so happy when she won. Such a beautiful girl inside and out.

This was such a great TV moment. It looked a bit silly at the time but is really great. And she turned into the first Miss America to promote AIDS awareness -- this was 6 years after the disease was even known about. She was beautiful too.

So true all around, John. An exceptionally beautiful young woman physically, with so much character, grace, and purpose. One of the few TRUE Miss Americas. Also to her credit, she wasn't afraid to help heal the dreaded AIDS patients.

Interesting fact...on her preliminary night Kaye Lani was only able to unattach ONE of the hand props from her belt. Unphased, she continued her performance with one hand prop while elegantly gesturing with her other hand.

THAT's what I want to know! Anyway I borrowed a clip from this for my video and credited your video link. If problem, please let me know thanks.

Overall, w/o question best talent that nite, was the ONLY 1 of the finalists who actually won a preliminary talent award, & she deserved it- Ms Louisiana for that astounding ventriloquist act, doing her own voice plus 2 other completely different singing voices, 1 a male & 1 a female. She truly is amazing; try seeing the 1 or 2 times MAX where it even looks like her lips move. A ventriloquist who yodels & holds it THAT long! sorry, toni can't hold a candle to that and neither did anyone else.

Well, I have to strongly disagree that Mississippi was the best talent that night. Without question, if you know the history of final night talents through the years, Miss Maryland Tammy Walker's rendition of don'r rain on my parade is without question the best ever performed. No doubt Toni seawright has a great voice and puts her heart into it but she couldn't hold her notes nearly as long or with the vigor that walker put into her. But the absolute hands down winner for talent that night was

P.S. She's alright, but she wasn't great. She kept moving her upper body and her farapu's (the wave movements of her hips) weren't defined, and she mainly did the bump. It looked as if she had recently learned it. On the other hand, Nicole Fox (she totally should've been Miss America), was unbelievable, you can truly see her 18 years of experience when you watch her dancing. :D

I have heard that she is very nice but many of my Polynesian friends were really upset with this performance and the lack of education in the Polynesian culture. I am not blaming her, she didn't know any better and the internet wasn't exactly around for proper research. I blame the dance teachers who think they can just order the costume and do whatever in it and call it Polynesian dance. Unfortunately, many studios still have not become more educated to this day.
