Miss Grand International 2016, Ariska Putri Pertiwi from Indonesia, and Miss Grand International Runner Up 2016, Supaporn Malisorn from Thailand, were proud to visit Laos on the first leg of their country tour after receiving the crown of Miss Grand International.
The women were crowned at the winning ceremony on October 25 in Las Vegas, USA.
Part of their duty as winners of the international pageant is to tour 12 different countries to promote local cultures and raise awareness of social issues. Both of them said they were excited at the prospect of learning more about Lao culture and visiting some well known sights.
The women told Vientiane Times during a visit to the Lao Press in Foreign Languages office yesterday that the food here is very good and lived up to its reputation, while the traditional dress was also beautiful and different from others they had encountered because much of it is still handmade.
They said their reason for visiting Laos on the first leg of their country tour was for the 450th anniversary of the That Luang stupa and the accompanying festival.
Miss Grand International is an annual, international beauty contest run by the Miss Grand International Organisation based in Thailand.
The goal of the pageant is not only to find the most beautiful contestant, but to stop violence against women and aid victims of war through awareness raising campaigns. The responsibility of Ms Grand International is not only to wear the crown and sash but also to help raise awareness regarding these issues of great importance.
The ladies thanked the people of Laos for the warm reception they received. Their stay includes four days in Vientiane, visits to many places and attending events like the That Luang Festival.
At the festival, they wore traditional Lao costumes to show their appreciation of Lao culture. Even though their time here was short, the ladies said their experiences had made a lasting impression. When they arrive in Thailand, they will share their positive experiences and impressions from their visit to Laos.
Following their return to Thailand, the ladies plan to travel to more than 10 countries and will visit abused women and victims of war. The next countries they plan to visit are China and Vietnam.
Miss Grand International 2017 will be hosted in Vietnam, with women from more than 80 countries joining in the competition for the prize of Miss Grand International.
