Song: “Miss Kita Kung Christmas”
Written by: Fe M. Ayala - Hermie A. Uy
Music and memories are interwined in the soundtrack of our lives. This point is all the more evident and emphasized when it comes to Christmas music.
“Miss Kita Kung Christmas” is a Filipino Christmas pop classic that instantly transports its listeners to Christmases past. The listener is bathed in the glow of nostalgia with a touch of melancholy. OPM Archive explores this beautiful Pinoy Christmas evergreen and how it has withstood the test of time and trends.New Paragraph
In 1978, the song “Miss Kita Kung Christmas” was recorded, released and popularised by Susan Fuentes, known as the “Queen of Visayan Songs”, under JEM Records.
It was initially released as a 45 single with no accompanying full length record or LP. The song later on found a home in an album when in the early 1990’s, Telesis Records (the record company that acquired the JEM Records catalogue) included it in the album entitled Telesis Bestsellers.
This song is a Christmas ballad that expresses the pain of a broken heart during the festive Yuletide season.New Paragraph
Composers
The lyrics “Miss Kita Kung Christmas” were written by Fe Misa Ayala. She was the wife of the Attorney Jesus Ayala who owned JEM records.
Mrs. Ayala commissioned her friend Hermie A. Uy, a singer, pianist and composer, to write the melody to the lyrics.
Original Recording
Unbeknownst to many, the recording of Susan Fuentes of “Miss Kita Kung Christmas” was not the first recording of the song.
In 1976, two years before, Miss Fuentes’ recording, a studio band called “The Lightnings” recorded the song also for JEM Records.
This 45 single was produced by JEM record executive/ member of APO Hiking Society, Jim Paredes. Mr. Paredes is also the nephew of the song’s lyricist, Mrs. Fe Ayala. The Lightnings’ version was also arranged by Quito Colayco who also sang the vocal lead. Jim Paredes also sang the backing vocals on this track.
Unlike the popular Susan Fuentes version of the song, which employed an orchestral sound with female choir (most likely performed by fellow JEM Records artist - Passionata), the recording of The Lightnings has a light/ pop band setting.
Subsequent Versions
“Miss Kita Kung Christmas” has become a Christmas staple and favourite amongst Filipinos through the decades. Proof of this are the many versions recorded by prominent Filipino recording artists.
The song has been recorded by Ryan Cayabyab (a cappella version in his ONE Christmas album), Rico J. Puno, the APO Hiking Society, Sharon Cuneta, Sarah Geronima, Aiza Seguerra, Janet Basco, Ima Castro, Carol Banawa, Jessa Zaragosa, Manilyn Reynes, Ronnie Liang, Donna Cruz among others.
