This footage shows the Howard Morrison Quartet performing at the 1963 Miss New Zealand pageant. Formed in 1956, the Quartet was a hugely popular music and comedy act from Rotorua.
Howard Morrison, Gerry Merito, Wi Wharekura and Noel Kingi were introduced at the pageant as the ‘stars of New Zealand show business’. In this video they sing covers of songs including ‘I Love Paris’, ‘Waltzing Matilda’, ‘Shadrach’, ‘Blah, Blah, Blah’ and ‘Haere Rā e Hine’. The songs are interspersed with short comedy routines.
The Howard Morrison Quartet had a string of hit-singles in New Zealand and featured in the first official television broadcast on June 1 1960. They were also highly successful in Australia, where they performed regularly.
The Quartet disbanded in 1964, and Howard Morrison went on to become one of New Zealand’s leading television and concert performers. In 1990 he was awarded a knighthood for his services to the New Zealand entertainment scene.
Shot from a single camera point with a sound on film camera ( like an Auricon camera) the material was scanned from a combined dupe neg at 2K. The sound track was variable density so was copied in a lab to a sound print and digitised and synchronised in a computer.
