As a longtime fan of the Sci-Fi genre, it's understandable that you have to suspend perhaps a lot of disbelief. The movie was generally enjoyable except for a couple issues. In order to advance the plot, they stated that the ship was overbuilt for two people so they decided to squeeze in one more crew member. "Overbuilt" translates to "safety margin." Even without the stowaway, they undertook a journey in a totally unforgiving environment with zero safety margin. Contributing to the lack of safety margin is the that the critical life support system (CDRA) is only installed on one module with no replacements. It just seems like there could've been a better way to create a crisis than that.

@randomguy9777 I think you missed the context of my comment. "Overbuilt" as used in the context of this movie refers the excess capacity or capabilities of the vehicle for two crew members. That "overcapacity" is also known as a safety margin and has nothing to do with a rocket's throw weight. Also, a space craft as depicted in the movie (and probably any real future Mars missions) would be assembled in orbit using multiple launches.

@randomguy9777 Lack of safety margins cost lives. It's a good thing you're not the program manager for anything involving safety. And please stop referring to the Apollo programs as proof of your assertions when they in fact refute them. A simple 30 seconds of searching for the keywords "redundancy" and "Apollo" will easily yield information with which to educate you.

So, on a mission to Mars, one of the absolutely mission critical systems has no backups and is impossible to repair or replace? It seems unrealistic such an oversight would occur, and in the Apollo era, I would agree. But in the space shuttle era, oversights of that magnitude did happen and led to the Challenger and Columbia disasters. Both failures were anticipated by engineers, but their warnings were ignored.
@WadmanP

It was definitely a suspension of disbelief that was tough to swallow. But even more glaring was squeezing a third crew into a vehicle optimized for two people (with a comfortable safety margin). If you use the common analogy of holes in Swiss cheese lining up, adding a third member is like making a big hole in the very first slice.

10:47: host says, when they reach the Solar Array “ just one wrong move, or if they touch a panel, it will shut down the ships power”. WTF! They’re in the middle of space, travelling at a High volume of speed. Can you imagine if a pebble were to be in the way of their trajectory? At that velocity it’s like a missile going off. And they’re worried about touching a panel.

yeah that was dumb, those panels is not that sensitive, needs a tad bit more then just a touch to break them, in fact, they expect some panels to be damaged so they are designed with redundancy in mind.

The scientist doesn’t have the algae to do his experiments. The stowaway is an ENGINEER. It seems the engineer is more important then the scientist that can’t do anything. Seems the scientist is the logical one to get rid of. Mission leader-pilot, a doctor-self explanatory, an engineer-very good for mechanical things on the spacecraft, and a scientist- can’t do his research without his algae. Simple solution really.
