Fun video but there is a big error at 4:59 that needs to be fixed. The church in fact does has paid ministry. The top 90+ church leaders all make a healthy six-figure salary and with all their salaries added as well as other church positions it sums up to a much larger amount than the church donates to charity everywhere.
@CalledtoShare
2 жыл бұрын
It is not a salary, it is a stipend. But yes, very few of the officers of the church receive this stipend. Those in the ministry who receive the stipend are so few, that it's more accurate to state that the ministry of the Church isn't paid. Should people know about the stipend? Yes. But are any who receive the stipend making more money than they did at the previous employment? Probably not. President Nelson was a heart surgeon probably making over $500,000 (or a lot more) and now gives 24/7 of his time to the Church for a stipend of $150,000-$200,000 a year maybe? The only reason a stipend is given is because they are ask to give all of their time to their calling as prophets, apostles, or seventy. Thanks for the comment!
@LoganBeck
2 жыл бұрын
@@CalledtoShare in 2014 the stipend (living allowance) was moved to $120k per year. As reported by The Salt Lake Tribune with no response from Church representatives, 89 men make up the top-tier of the church that make this allowance. That sums up to nearly 11 million per year, which is shockingly only half of what the church donates per year (According to financial records the church donated $60m per year, more than 60% of that comes from private donations such as LDS Philanthropy Organizations and not from the Church’s funds whatsoever). Yes, it is a stipend but why does it need to be so much? Praising these men of dropping their larger paid jobs is nothing more than a Scotsman Fallacy that holds no value to this topic. I see members here in Asia that go hungry for days because they pay their 10%, please tell me why the church decides to divide 11 million among its top 89 men? Let’s also address the New Testament where Christ said his disciples should sell everything they have and give it to the poor. I don’t see this happening even to the 1% from the church and especially not from the leaders. Very disappointing.

I’d also like to add that included in the “stipend” besides a yearly salary is free life insurance from Beneficial Mutual, free housing expenses, free travel expenses, free tuition expenses for family members at church schools. I don’t know about health insurance, but I’m guessing that’s included too. It adds up to multi millions of dollars. We could all be so lucky.

@@LoganBeck Let me ask you....have YOU sold EVERYTHING you have and given the money to the poor? Also, keep things in context....when Jesus said this, He was speaking to an individual referred to in the Bible as 'the rich young ruler'. This man felt he had kept all the commandments, but Jesus knew his heart. Jesus knew that he clung to his riches and and placed them before God in his life. The counsel Jesus gave was for this individual and was not a blanket statement that applied to all. God is not opposed to wealth (look at Abraham and Job, Genesis 13:2; Job1:1-3), but it is the LOVE of money (not money itself) that causes problems in people's lives. (1Timothy 6:10). Elsewhere Jesus said 'it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for those who 'TRUST IN RICHES' (not those who HAVE riches) to enter the kingdom of God'. (Mark 10:23-25). It's all about your relationship with money and whether it is impacting negatively on your relationship with God. Abraham and Job had great riches but they handled them responsibly and valued their relationship with God above everything....and the fruit of their lives bear this truth out. 'By their fruits you will know them' (Matthew7:15-20).

I think a lot of these misconceptions date clear back to the early days of the restoration, when only a few thousand saints were around and many areas of the world simply had no members anywhere close. They just kind of heard about a "spooky cult" and without solid information to go on, things were basically made up and invented. Even here in the 2020s, we're seeing many of the same imaginations of critics crop up in the public consciousness and it does get hard sometimes to deflate that these things simply aren't real. Being honest about it all is usually enough to convince a fair-minded person. They might spawn more questions, you might answer honestly. Perhaps they'll understand it's not spooky, and probably not a cult (highly depends on definition of cult -- the ones that include it would also have things like Catholics and Protestants labeled as cults and that's not what critics want ;) )

However these missionarys looked shocked with some of the questions one about race and color of skin and another about women be suppressed When I have come across these questions my answers are always.. Well at the time black ppl were tend to be slaves for the rich ppl and however the gospel is for them it would have made too much of an issue with who had rights and no rights so when this issue was sorted that's when priesthood and what ppl say was the curse gets removed also I remind them that we are all cursed in sin no matter what color until we repent and be baptised. Also women ain't suppressed at all and if it means there more smart focused and modest then thats not suppression thats actually a blessing

@@TheWorldTeacher Namakar! Our scriptures absolutely do say that non-harm is the highest priciple/duty/law. I agree with you in general that we should be vegan if we adhere to sanatan dharma. What do you think about dairy? Vegans usually define dairy as non-vegan. However, our scriptures say that dairy is absolutely acceptable if the cow is treated with kindness and respect and non-violence. In America, nobody respects cows so I agree that in America we should not consume milk. But in other contexts, I think it is fine. Also, it is important to note that the scriptures do allow for eating the meat from animals offered as part of Vedic sacrifices. This is discussed in Manu-smriti, Shrimad Bhagavatam, and other scriptures. However, this course of action is recommended against by our sages and rishis, but it is technically allowed. I am only saying this because I do believe we need to have some nuance in how we understand our Sanatan scriptures. Sanatan Dharma does specify that we must be non-violent to the greatest extent possible, but it also give provisions for dairy, animal-sacrifices, war, etc.

These young people seemed completely shocked by the question when really they should've been educated on church history specifically so they would never be thrown by this question or others like it. To be clear, this type of question doesn't come out of thin air and this is a topic that may very well come up on missions. The church promoted a very clear viewpoint in living memory that certainly seems to be racist. I'm grateful for further revelation that made the church's stance today very clear in rejecting racism, but even the church acknowledges that this wasn't always the case: "Today, the Church disavows the theories advanced in the past that black skin is a sign of divine disfavor or curse, or that it reflects unrighteous actions in a premortal life; that mixed-race marriages are a sin; or that blacks or people of any other race or ethnicity are inferior in any way to anyone else. Church leaders today unequivocally condemn all racism, past and present, in any form." www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics-essays/race-and-the-priesthood?lang=eng Personally, I really like the interpretation of scripture explained by Brother Fullmer in his "Black and White in the Book of Mormon": kzitem.info/news/bejne/sXqAnGGFbl-Soag

Like why did Joseph Smith practice polyandry contrary to the commandments in D&C128? And why did the church alter wording used to describe the relationship of the Godhead after the Book of Mormon had already been completed? And why is it that Joseph Smith made a failed prophecy about Martin Harris meeting a man who would be eager to buy the copyright to the Book of Mormon? On that note, why would Joseph Smith even think about selling the right to the Book of Mormon? Imagine if someone actually did buy the copyright, they could edit the BoM however they wanted to and publish that as the word of God. Overall a little dissapointed on the quality of questions. Do they really think people avoid and leave the Mormon church over stuff like "Mormons have horns"?

Ah yes all wrong, note the different number of so called wives. I am no church historian but, no I would say he only loved his wife Emma. He loved his family also but not in the same way. Sickness often would take the lives of husbands or wives, women didn't really have the rights they have today it was very hard to be a widow with a few kids, ya know. So people were married for that reason, also there was a time were members were confused on how to get to the highest degree of glory so there was something called sealings or temple marriages and women would get sealed to the prophet (that's not how that works btw) and then the two people would go their separate ways. All the being said yes there was men with lots wives, kinda weird, not gonna lie. Something to do with the church needing more people, probably because everywhere else we went everyone wanted to kill us. I really don't think I could do that if I lived in those times. In the Saints book, I believe it talks about how Joseph really, really didn't want to tell people God wanted it to be a thing, but hey when God tells ya to do something you so it. Also if you want to know what I am telling the truth, just pray about, God's not going to lie to you.

Most of these questions are admittedly stereotyping, but if these missionaries were to confront a Bible believer and Bible reader, then they'd resort to cliche answers and big smiles, not knowing how to properly divide the Word of God and resort further into naivete and just bear their testimony as taught.

Your "Christology" has no basis in the New Testament or in the Great Christological Councils of the early Church. While you may very sincerely believe that you are Christian you cannot be regarded so in the light of Biblical and Traditional teaching on the Mystery of God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
@CalledtoShare

The "Great Christological Councils of the early Church" have no basis in God's truth. They were councils of men trying to form an understanding of who God is, and the truth was revealed to Joseph Smith in 1820 when God, and His Son Jesus Christ, appeared as two separate beings to the prophet Joseph Smith.

Hey! Saw that your question wasn’t really answered, so ima do my best. I’m fairly sure that it’s still a held belief that Native Americans are descendants of Laman and/or Lemuel - the sons of Lehi, who left Jerusalem in 600 B.C. - however, I am not sure about Pacific Islanders; at least, I never really learned that as the introduction of the Book of Mormon only said that the Lamanites are “among the ancestors of the American Indians” (Introduction of the Book of Mormon). As that statement is still in the introduction of the Book of Mormon, I would say that it is still a held belief (idk bout “common” or not) that Native Americans are descendants of Laman and/or Lemuel; not sure about Pacific Islanders, since I don’t know. Not saying that’s it’s not possible, though, since it does say something interesting that MIGHT (emphasis on “might”) point towards that in the Book of Mormon in Alma 63:5-8: “And it came to pass that Hagoth, he being an exceedingly curious man, therefore he went forth and built him an exceedingly large ship, on the borders of the land Bountiful, by the land Desolation, and launched it forth into the west sea, by the narrow neck which led into the land northward. “And behold, there were many of the Nephites who did enter therein and did sail forth with much provisions, and also many women and children; and they took their course northward. And thus ended the thirty and seventh year. “And in the thirty and eighth year, this man built other ships. And the first ship did also return, and many more people did enter into it; and they also took much provisions, and set out again to the land northward. “And it came to pass that they were never heard of more. And we suppose that they were drowned in the depths of the sea. And it came to pass that one other ship also did sail forth; and whither she did go we know not” (Alma 63:5-8). Dunno what happened to those Nephites, so they could have been the ones to be the ancestors of Pacific Islanders, but I don’t know. They supposed that they drowned, and they very well might have. It’s not impossible for them to be their ancestors though, if you take into account the Great Pause in Polynesian history, but I’m just going to leave it there since this is just mere speculation. In other much more shorter words: Yes, we believe that Native Americans are descended from Laman and/or Lemuel, but we’re - or I’m - not sure about Pacific Islanders; although, they MIGHT (emphasis on “might”) be, but that’s something you gotta ask God about since I don’t know everything. Anyways, sorry for the essay lollll. Hope that helped! If you have any more questions, I have some missionary friends that would love to help :))

Why would God give free agency and then use an angel with a flaming sword to threaten you to do his will? Why is coffee so bad that if you drink it you can't go to the temple but Red Bull is fine? Why did God change his mind on if children of gay parents should be baptized in just a few years time? Why would God give two contradicting commandments at the same time and make it impossible to follow both?

Great questions. 1) The account that is used was canonized in the Pearl of Great Price and thus became the best known account. That's why it's used by the missionaries, but all the accounts are found here > www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics-essays/first-vision-accounts?lang=eng 2) Great question. Plural marriage must have been really important. 3) Not sure. I trust the revelation given in section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenant. Hot drinks are specifically mentioned, Red Bull isn't. 4) President Nelson gave a whole talk on this at BYU. Link should start at the 1709 mark where he references this > kzitem.info/news/bejne/w3iKmpdro4mFoKg 5) If this is in reference to the Garden of Eden, I have thought that it might have been possible God didn't want them multiplying and replenishing right away, but later. Consider the law of chastity, there is a sequence to us living that law. Before marriage, sexual relations are prohibited. After marriage, sexual relations are divinely approved between husband and wife, legally and lawfully married. Perhaps God didn't want Adam and Eve to partake of the fruit for a time, and then that command would be lifted so they could multiple and replenish. Just a thought. This one has always confused, me, and the whole Christian world. I can't wait to fully comprehend this one day.

I can study things out and learn for myself. The role of prophets and apostles is to teach and testify of Christ and His gospel. Has the Church always done the best job of being open about all things that have happened? No. Are they doing better? Yes. The Saints volumes is a great example of their desire to be transparent. The Bible also says in Psalm 82:6 I said 'You are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High'. In John 10:31-39, Jesus quoted this verse when the Jews wanted to stone Him for what they thought was blasphemy because He claimed to be equal with God the Father. "Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods" '? If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and scripture cannot be broken), do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?". St Paul, when he was in Athens, told the people, "for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also His offspring'. Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man's devising." (Acts 17:28-29).

@@1974AMDG and example of psalm 82:6 is Putin he is a god a person of higher authority/ ruler/ judge of the people if you keep reading psalms it says “ but you will surely die like a princess” I’m using putin as an example he’s killing people he has power to do so but regardless god is above all these so call gods/ rulers/ judges, he is the creator “ you are children of the most high” Putin will die like every other ruler god and stand to the real god and judge Now, let’s look at how Jesus uses this passage. Jesus had just claimed to be the Son of God (John 10:25-30). The unbelieving Jews respond by charging Jesus with blasphemy, since He claimed to be God (verse 33). Jesus then quotes Psalm 82:6, reminding the Jews that the Law refers to mere men-albeit men of authority and prestige-as “gods.” Jesus’ point is this: you charge me with blasphemy based on my use of the title “Son of God”; yet your own Scriptures apply the same term to magistrates in general. If those who hold a divinely appointed office can be considered “gods,” how much more can the One whom God has chosen and sent (verses 34-36)? In contrast, we have the serpent’s lie to Eve in the Garden. His statement, “your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5), was a half-truth. Their eyes were opened (verse 7), but they did not become like God. In fact, they lost authority, rather than gaining it. Satan deceived Eve about her ability to become like the one true God, and so led her into a lie. Jesus defended His claim to be the Son of God on biblical and semantic grounds-there is a sense in which influential men can be thought of as gods; therefore, the Messiah can rightly apply the term to Himself. Human beings are not “gods” or “little gods.” We are not God. God is God, and we who know Christ are His children. Jesus claimed to be god “before Abraham! I AM!” preached Paul (Acts 17:27-28, ESV). He cited the crowd’s own poets to capture their attention and expose the contradiction in their thinking. He wanted the Athenians to know that God is not a lifeless idol fashioned by human hands of wood, gold, silver, or stone. He is a living God, and in Him we live Paul’s next statement, “We are his offspring” (verse 28), also the words of an ancient Stoic poet-philosopher, further developed this idea. Humans are children of God. He is their Father in the natural sense Genesis 1:27; Malachi 2:10; Luke 3:38; Ephesians 3:14 , thus proving that the living God is far superior to dead idols

Emma, we have a lay ministry. Yes, a portion of the general authorities receive stipends, but unlike most churches where the local church workers are paid, the hundreds of thousands of bishops, counselors, organizational presidents aren't paid, so it's not misleading. The church has a lay ministry. “General Authorities leave their careers when they are called into full-time church service,” said Eric Hawkins, spokesman for the church. “When they do so, they focus all of their time on serving the church, and are given a living allowance. The living allowance is uniform for all General Authorities. None of the funds for this living allowance come from the tithing of church members, but instead from proceeds of the church’s financial investments.”

If Jesus said “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven” Matt 22:30, why do Mormons believe that you can be sealed (in marriage) for an eternity?
@1974AMDG

After Jesus returns ('at the resurrection') no one will marry or be given in marriage. All those who are already married will remain married for eternity and all those who are not married at the time of the resurrection. when Jesus comes, will remain unmarried for eternity.

@CalledtoShare

Nope. Bishops receive no pay. The only people in the Church of 17 million members who receive money are the senior leaders of the church who are asked to leave their professions and receive stipend for living expenses since they devote 100% of their time to their calling and can't be employed. This is a good little article on the subject > www.patheos.com/blogs/danpeterson/2019/07/on-those-living-stipends-for-general-authorities.html

The Doctrine and Covenants tell us to pay the bishops. Section 42:71-73 71 And the elders or high priests who are appointed to assist the bishop as counselors in all things, are to have their families supported out of the property which is consecrated to the bishop, for the good of the poor, and for other purposes, as before mentioned; 72 Or they are to receive a just remuneration for all their services, either a stewardship or otherwise, as may be thought best or decided by the counselors and bishop. 73 And the bishop, also, shall receive his support, or a just remuneration for all his services in the church. Section 43:12-13 12 And if ye desire the glories of the kingdom, appoint ye my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and uphold him before me by the prayer of faith. 13 And again, I say unto you, that if ye desire the mysteries of the kingdom, provide for him food and raiment, and whatsoever thing he needeth to accomplish the work wherewith I have commanded him; Section 51:13-14 13 And again, let the bishop appoint a storehouse unto this church; and let all things both in money and in meat, which are more than is needful for the wants of this people, be kept in the hands of the bishop. 14 And let him also reserve unto himself for his own wants, and for the wants of his family, as he shall be employed in doing this business.

I don't like missionaries. They take advantage of poor people and force/bribe them to convert out of their beliefs and culture. I am totally fine with people expressing their culture and beliefs but bribing others to convert isn't right. I am proud to be a Hindu of my culture and would never change as that is who I am, but I am also fine if other people convert based on their own choices and no external influence. If the world was the same people would be boring. God has gifted us individuality to have our own different beliefs and culture! If you are from a different religion or are atheist, I respect that as your belief I for one have defiantly questioned a lot about my religion and changed how I perceive it. I am sure there are good missionaries out there who just want to do help and not go around bribing others to join, but many have. I agree a good deed always is better than any prayer.

Q. Is the church rich ? A. Yes the church has an estimated net worth in the 300.000.000.000 to 600.000.000.000 billion $ that it uses only a fraction of 1% of to help the needy. I mean how on earth would we put up so many buildings that aren't really necessary, including giving every town in Utah 3 Temple's and pay tens of millions a year in attorneys and legal fee's for child abuse lawsuits?

There is a ton of paid ministry, all of the "general authorities", and the ones they call apostles and prophets are paid very well. They also travel all over the world with all expenses paid in addition to their salaries. This is easily confirmed with google
@CalledtoShare

What percentage of those who have callings are paid? It's not a ton. There are less than 100 who are paid. There are hundreds of thousands who hold callings in the ministry of this church. And it is a stipend, not a salary. And they all make much less than they would if they had kept their day jobs. Since they are devoting 100% of their time to the church they are given the stipend. But yes, as you said, this is all common knowledge and easily confirmed on Google.

When one is called to be a General Authority, one is called to give up their jobs and careers, to be in service to the Lord 24/7 for the rest of their lives. So, naturally, they would need a way to receive money to pay their bills, buy groceries, keep a roof over their heads, pay for medical expenses, and pay for travel expenses that their calling and the Lord Jesus Christ requires of them. Is the amount they receive enough for them to live lavishly? No, just enough for them to do what they need to do as the Prophets and Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ.

They donated close to a billion dollars last year. A billion dollars. Does it matter what percentage it is of what they own? The reason they have so much in store is because there are even more perilous times ahead. Do you think people said Joseph of Egypt wasn't generous when he was storing grain in Egypt during times of plenty? Guess what, they certainly changed their tune when the famine came and Joseph saved their lives because he had grain.
