The Missouri Waltz is attributed to Missourian Lee Edgar Settle (1882-1849) who first committed the tune to paper on 1914. it is, however, quite likely that the tune predated Settle's writing by a few decades. It is interesting that the tune was first known as The Graveyard Waltz, primarily because of its minor section. The name was changed, and lullabye lyrics were set to the then famous tune.
The Missouri Waltz was former US President Harry Truman's favorite, and he frequently played it for presidential guests on the White House Steinway. in 1949, the State of Missouri adopted the tune as their state song.
