@@CaliKim29 No, I'm way over here in South Jersey, west side, close to the Delaware River. Zone used to be 6a or b, but when "they" last revamped the zone charts, it was bumped to 7a, very similar to Gary Pilarchik in MD. I'm more comfortable with the idea of 6b. Last frost date here is (allegedly) April 14. Most people here don't plant seeds or seedlings outside til Mother's Day, mid-May. Two years ago I put plants in after Mother's Day. Two weeks later, at the end of May, we had an unprecedented four-day freeze. Really threw everyone off. In an abundance of caution, I'm thinking maybe a form of succession planting, so I don't lose everything at the same time. First frost is listed as Oct 24. So I'm learning about cool crops and warm crops, succession planting, fall planting for spring, etc. Going to try year round indoor growing of just a few things - herbs, dwarf tomatoes, maybe snack size peppers. My house is small, so space is a problem. Humidity will be a special concern. The last thing I want is to cause mold to grow on the walls. And one of my two cats is a plant eater, which will require some ingenuity to keep him safe. Lots of thinking, lots of planning, lots of effort. Normally I find joy in it, but I've been having a tough time with depression. I'm of the mind that success is the best "revenge", so I hope I can rally and push through it. Each small success will strengthen my resolve, and lead to more success. Meanwhile, watching you and Gary P. gives me hope along with learning great tips. Watching you start your outdoor planting long before I can, sparks that healthy, exciting anticipation, and reminds me to start getting ready to do it here. I so appreciate that your channel is a safe space for me. You and Jerry are good wholesome people, in a world that seems increasingly harsh to me. Well, that's a lot of words, but there it is. Looking forward to the next episode in Grow Your Groceries!

Hi Kim, I am also in SoCal zone 10b. I sowed a 4-pack tomato seeds about a week ago. The real leaves are starting to form. No grow mat, I don’t own one but so far so good. I can’t wait for warmer longer sunny days!! PS. My sugar daddy peas had been blooming and there’s a pea pod already. Can you tell how excited I am? 😊

I wonder if you get more consistent quality transplants with lights vs using a greenhouse/cold frame
@juanarosa-gonzalez6705
Жыл бұрын
If you use a cold area for the warm weather plants seedlings, they just sit there : stunts. I just use a cold area before transplant to make a transition.

Another great video! Listen, I’m doing my own experiment with the DIY seed starting mix compared to the bag mix. Something I’m already noticing is the fact that the DIY pots don’t look as compacted as the bag mix pots. I have 8 bell pepper plants that I cut back “to the Y” at Christmas and they are already growing new leaves. Is it too soon? (Florida 9a/9B border)
@CaliKim29

Hi Stephanie - glad you're getting good result w/ the DIY mix, my plants love it! Sounds like your peppers are responding well to your pruning, and it's probably warm enough there to let them grow. Enjoy!
