American Chestnut is a rare piece to turn. The young trees only live for about 25 years before the blight kills them. Only the root systems of the old trees are still living. It would be an honor to have a piece of one of those to turn. You are a lucky man the have such nice friends to send you such a piece of our history.

So simple in its shape but SO elegant Phil. Little bit harsh on yourself regarding mistakes. What mistakes! Simple but beautiful & the grain does work well & is well supported by the Feed n Wax. The size of the opening is not too large & is well hollowed out & the flowers are a GREAT addition. Great piece, particularly for a man on the Come Back Trail after surgery. I think I have told you that I am now just 3 weeks today, post op from a a full Right Shoulder Replacement so I'm right there with you. Take your time my friend, the little simple things will gradually lead you back to the projects you prefer, GIVEN TIME. Stay well my friend, Don from South Aust.

Hi Phil, Your piece turned out very nice and with the flowers added even more lovely. My project has taken me into the world of sanding sealers, pore fillers, grain fillers, stains, lacquers, shellacs and oils. I am learning 100+ year old methods and modern methods regarding the chemicals and such. One almost needs a college degree to figure this all out. I have a ton of practice pieces to use when perfecting the applications and such. My main piece is American Walnut which I think is a beautiful wood. I hope to knock it out of the park with proper finishing.

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thanks Phil, I was already into the overthinking mode. I just want the wood to look like 1873 close to new again and not the horrible 149 years of black crud that is on the stock now. You can't even see any of the wood grain it's so dirty. I'll start by cleaning all the crud off and see what I have to work with from there.
