Hi Stacy from Newcastle Australia again I miss riding with friends out in the bush I have not owned a horse since I was a teenager

Awesome and timely for me! With our winter spent "working" this past October-May, I decided my horse's summer was going to be more about enjoying our time together and trail riding in the fresh outdoors while the opportunity presents itself. (Though we still do work on stuff, it's not the super-focused arena work we've done all cold season.) Though I'm only talking to him when trail riding as we go by ourselves, I still am more than likely unintentionally moving the reins at least during parts of our rides together. I'll focus on resting that rein hand on the saddle horn next time out to force myself to give my boy a break when a break is my intention! :) THANKS, Stacy!

You are very welcome! I do the same thing. I ride alone quite a bit but I still train myself to set my hand down. It does reveal ones natural tenancies!

What bit do you use? I have an older horse that I am using a Reinsman Jr Cow horse bit. She was bought from an individual and no info was given on the bit used.

Hey Stacy! These trails look so incredible! Do you have any issues with sliders on the trails? Looks like lots of different terrain, from creeks to mud to steep hills!
@StacyLWestfall

When we first started riding here we worried about the sidles...but it turns out that if your horse can walk on pavement in the parking lots then they have figured out how to do the trails! Seriously, the pavement is harder than any of the trails here. A few years ago we rode in California at a place called rock park. That would NOT have worked! Jesse even takes his lesson students (Reiners) out on the trails after the arena work and they all do fine...so it isn't just our horses!

I love these videos of you trail riding! The scenery alone is breathtaking and where I am from in Ontario it is hard to find these types of trails. We have to trailer a distance just to get to them and they are usually busy with cyclists and hikers as well. Which is fine I have no problem sharing the trail. However, I have a new horse that I haven't done any trail riding with yet other than around our little farm. He has been an interesting project and partner. My trust in his reactions and my ability to ride through them has been lost and I am working hard to get it back. We had a bit of an accident where he fell during a canter and I was hurt. I blame myself for making a bad decision but it has shaken me. I have a long history with horses. I was a farrier for 20 years, showed in games, jumper and dressage and used to pride myself in having a strong seat. I have lost trust in myself after having a few very nasty concussions from shoeing actually and not even riding! I used to be able to come off and get right back on especially at a refusal of a jump! Watching these videos makes me long for my confidence which is slowly coming back. But really slowly..too slowly.. I downloaded the ride with confidence program and it is wonderful. Just a side note I am also a "life coach" of sorts where I work with people, usually non-horse people and equine assisted therapy. Funny, how I now need this for myself! Thanks Stacy for everything you do! Keep the trail riding videos coming!! Once Covid is over or we are dealing with it better I would love to come for a visit! ( and a lesson or 2).

Another wonderful video, thanks Stacy. Coming from Australia, I’m not sure how big the Mohican National Park is and the distant you are trail riding. Do you ride from your place to access the trails or do you trailer your horse there. 😄Ok, adding a Humming Bird to the list of critters....still waiting for a Skunk.🌹🦘

Thanks! It is a state park so not huge. I'll have to look up the land size. The best part is that there are three parks that all touch each other and between them there are about 98 miles of trails. That would be about 157 kilometers. I can ride 5 minutes up the road on my horse and be onto the trail system. The trails are NOT flat. Lots of up and down, sometimes gradual, sometimes steep. The short loops I ride are about an hour. The longer loops I ride are about 2 hours. I could ride the really long loops and be gone all day...but I don't do that often. Instead I ride one horse, come home and switch, and then ride another.

I’m a stroke survivor and I’m paralysed down my left side sooo have to ride a horse that has been trained to neck rein the Australian stockhorse cross quarter horse who is a campdrafter which is a Australian sport which you can see on you tube on a abc video so if I start having problems necktie Ing him there are lots of rider at the place where I ride which is a equine theropy place working with a lot af disabled people of all ages and types of disability’sit also difficult because I can only use my right leg on him so I ride with a whip as a persuader to keep him going when he get lazy it more important that he is on that lazy side rather than have a horse that is too sensative and might spook or shy because I would have no chance of sitting a shy I’m riding on balance and muscle memory prior to my my stroke I had ridden for nearly forty years

I love your advice on training horses I was wondering if you have any videos on how to deal with horses who are stubborn to go into the washrag my horse tends to stop on all 4 feet and not budge it’s a two-man job to get him in even if it’s just a Walkman because there’s another person in the runway and it would be nice to be able to walk him in there with no fuss

I would approach it much like sending one into a horse trailer. I do have a series of videos on this subject. Here is a link to the page where you can view them all. You will see that the horse problem horse in the video had a big problem with going in ...which you will see on the video. I also show how I trained him and the final result. I use a non problem horse and a problem horse but be sure to watch the problem horse (the sorrel) because I show the transformation from start to finish.stacywestfall.com/trailer-loading-sponsored-by-tekonsha/

Do you always use a fly mask? Do you apply fly spray before riding the trails?
@StacyLWestfall
5 жыл бұрын
I don't always use the mask. Early in the spring I don't need it but as soon as the face flies come out I use it. On very cool mornings I sometimes pack it in my trail bag and don't end up using it. I do use fly spray on their bodies. I prefer the all natural ones because they don't give me a headache.

When do you use split reins or “roper” joined reins? Any rules?
@StacyLWestfall

It depends on what I'm doing. I mostly use split and here is a link to a blog explaining why. stacywestfall.com/stacys-stuff-split-reins/ There are 'rules' if you are showing in different events but for training purposes I answer both reasons in the blog!
