Wonder Project is a game I feel like I need to finish at some point in my life. I had a gaming magazine as a kid that had Star Fox 64 on the cover and there was a 2 page article on WPJ2. One thing I like about the game is that you technically play as yourself and the main character talks to you directly.

The N64 core, as others have been saying, is nothing short of a remarkable achievement given the hardware that Robert had to work with, and having around 98% of games workable on the core definitely makes N64 gaming on the MiSTer a viable option for most people. That being said though, I can't help but be saddened that, as things currently stand, we aren't going to reach 100% compatibility with the core. There's a few games listed on this video that I'd have loved to see fully working on the core, but Resident Evil 2 in particular really stings for me. Sure, as you've pointed out we DO have the option of playing the PSX version (both of them, the OG and Dualshock) on the PSX core, and I'm sure a lot of people will default to it because of its more complete feature-set (Dualshock, especially) and lack of asset compression compared to the N64 port... but besides the fact that it was the first version of the game I've ever owned and played, it DOES have a few exclusive features that make it a pretty fun option to play if you're able to. Besides the simple stuff like exclusive costumes, the 3D control option, and the EX Files which references events from other games in the series all the way up to Code Veronica, the N64 version's randomizer mode by itself gives this version of the game a ton of extra replay value you don't see in any other port, unless you mod something similar into the game like you can with the Sourcenext PC release. Finally, the N64 port is another version of the game that has both Leon and Claire's stories fully integrated together, so no need to do any rom/disc swapping or anything like that, so there's that if you're someone who doesn't want to deal with disc swapping for whatever reason. I guess when it comes to RE2 and these other specific N64 titles I'll have to wait until Analogue releases their Analogue 3D FPGA console later this year (unless they push back the release date for whatever reason) and see if Analogue can step up to the plate, because who knows when exactly we'll see a proper successor to the MiSTer. I want to stress that I still think the work that's been done on the N64 core is truly impressive despite the disappointment I've just expressed over the core not quite reaching full compatibility, and that Robert should pat himself on the back for a job well done. There's still plenty of other N64 games I can still play on the MiSTer now that I would've never been able to play otherwise without all the hard work Robert has put into the core, and right now I'll gladly take what I can get. In the meantime, though, I'll be keeping a close eye on the development of the SEGA Saturn core!

Honestly, pretty cool that someone got this far with cramming an entire N64 in that tiny FPGA chip. Unless I'm missing something, the Saturn core should be way easier to cram into an FPGA by comparison given that N64 emulation is still really spotty to this day on PC, and has nowhere near as many compatible games as to what's on the MiSTer. Props to Robert! Really the next big question now is how powerful would a "MiSTer 2" be? It'd have to at least emulate up to the GCN, PS2, and OG Xbox. I know I'd buy one if it could. Then again, these newer consoles could get exponentially harder to emulate. Wouldn't surprise me if it would take a bigger FPGA to get a PS3 core up and running on one. Regardless, what's here is pretty freaking cool, and it shows the lengths people will take just to get their favourite games running on just about anything (and also help preserve them too, can't forget about that).

Rush 2049 savegames system is just borked, which is the core of the game's replayability. 😭Either slot it won't see character saves to load them, but it also warns me there's a dupe on the card when I try to create a character with the same name. Traditional mode of playing that title is a memory pak in slot 2 and a rumble pak in slot one to avoid pak-swapping. If I can get hold of a SNAC I can potentially just do it with real memcard.

Conker seems to also be working better in both PAL and NTSC modes. I haven't try Jet Force. Did you play around with that or not yet? I'm asking because I'm trying to see if the fact it's working for me and others is conditionned by the board used or the fact I'm running my Mister exclusively on a CRT using the io board. I’m not sure how computers work, but double logic might not work for a PS2 core. For example, the N64’s CPU runs at 93.75 MHz, while the base PS2 CPU runs at 294.912 MHz. That’s a ~3.14x increase (happy belated Pi Day), and keep in mind the DE10 wasn’t quite able to cross the finish line for the full N64. I might be calling it too soon, but outside of maybe the Dreamcast I think it’ll be about 10 years until a 6th Generation home console on FPGA will become a reality.

I appreciate the core developer’s effort, but I’ll be honest, this core remains “impossible”. The fact that it can’t run all games, especially staple titles like Conker, is a complete deal breaker. Let’s not forget the whole point of FPGA is hardware accuracy and perfection, so resorting to tricks and accepting glitches/imperfections is a clear contrary. As of now, for N64, software emulation is the way to go.

Definitely a shame to see Conker and JFG have gamebreaking issues. Gauntlet and Polaris are fun too. It's too bad the unplayable games didn't happen to be the terrible shovelware like Jeopardy or Elmo. You also got RE2 on DC, PC and GC (that's a lot of C's). But as long as there's no other gamebreaking issues in other games, it's still good coverage. You got your zeldas, your mario, your banjo, your goldeneye/perfect dark, list goes on. Amazing core.
