A Mitchell 306 is a nearly perfect size for a variety of fishing from fresh water to inshore salt water. I love mine!

Yes it is. Very versatile. Not as heavy as the 302 and stronger than the 300. Perfectly positioned - Thanks Ward - Dennis

Thanks for the video! I picked up a 306 that sounds just like this one at the beginning. I don't need a large reel, but it was very cheap and came with a small spare spool and case that fits my other Mitchells. I'll clean the 306 one snowy weekend and get her back into shape.

Glad I found this video for the time I'll need to clean and re-grease my Mitchell 306A. Now If I could only find how to get the guts of my Ryobi D4 Demon Drag out to clean the old grease out. Oh, I think I've fumbled my way into the solution...

Dennis, I have three of these great reels. One of mine when I first got it was choked with grease just like this one. These reels are so great that they can be brought back to their previous quality time after time. I converted one of mine to PUM and made it into an incredible surf reel. I also have two 405 reels - the high speed version of these reels. Again I converted one to PUM and it also became a great surf reel. I recently got a third 406 new in the box. So far I haven’t used it yet. The 306 doesn’t have a ball bearing but it will last and last with the bushings it has if you take care of it. Be careful with the pinion and sleeve on the 406 because it hides a number of ball bearings that will easily spill out if you aren’t careful. Mitchell made a masterpiece with the 306 and 406. Today I got another Roddy reel - a Sprinter 300 saltwater reel. It is not a reel you often find in the US. It will need some work but should be a fine reel when I’m done. - Chris

Hi there Dennis I love your videos on reel cleaning. I found a Mitchell 306 of my dad’s and all of a sudden it locked up watched your videos cleaned it up but the anti-reverse under the main gear is missing the screw that holds the anti-reverse in place where can I get a screw for that thank you so much for your time

You would need to strip the paint, prime the metal and repaint, usually with an automotive finish to get it right. I have seen beautiful examples of redone reels, but I do not repaint them. I let the patina tell the story - Dennis

Hi Dennis, I recently purchased a partially disassembled 306 for parts. I am attempting to remove the antireverse parts to use in another reel, but I’m running in a strange problem. The handle is so jammed up, that when I turn it to remove it hits against the anti reverse and it spins the shaft in the middle of the main gear. I suppose that’s one of the reasons it is a “parts” reel. I soaked the case with WD40, washed it out, heck I have even boiled the case in water for 20 minutes, the handle will not come loose. I’m thinking my only option at this point is to take a small hacksaw blade and cut the handle off where the thin brass washer meets the reel case. That will destroy the handle, which would be a shame, even though it’s no in good shape. But that should allow the gear to slide out so I can get the anti-reverse parts off. Do you have any other ideas? Thank you!

That is an odd one. Do you have the reel completely assembled as you are trying to take the handle off or has it been removed with the side plate? I like to take the handle off before removing the side plate as the pinion gear locks in on the main and stops it from spinning. Next - the handle comes off by turning it opposite of the way it cranks when using the reel. It may seem simple, but make sure that is the way you are turning it - On the 306, you would turn the handle clockwise, rather than the normal Lefty Loosey counterclockwise. If you have the side plate on and locked in, try grabbing the handle with a pliers at the base to use the pliers as additional leverage while turning to unscrew it. If all else fails, that pliers may snap off the handle and save you the trouble of hacksawing it. I do have parts for the 306 if you need any after you get into this one. Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle thanks for your insights. This reel was the most gummed up and foul up reel I’ve ever seen. It was as though it had been dipped in crazy glue. I had to break the spool to get it off of the shaft, and I ended up sawing the handle off to remove the gear. Even then I had to use a lot of pressure to force the gear out of the reel body. Luckily, the only damage the reel body sustained was some slight paint loss in the area where the handle met the body. I was able to salvage the ar dog and in the end, the only parts I cant reuse will be the handle, and the main gear, unless I can somehow use a screw extractor to remove what’s left of the handle bolt from the shaft. I still ended up with many usable parts. Thanks for your feedback and keep up the great work. Those of us who are into the older reels benefit greatly from your channel 🎣

You question was cut off, but I think you are asking about Mitchell versus Garcia Mitchell reels. Same reel. Garcia was the distributor of Mitchell reels in the US, so they added their name to the brand. Mitchell reels sold outside of the US did not have the Garcia name on them - Dennis

contrary to common belief, grease doesn't last forever. It dries out, loses it's viscosity . If it did last forever , they wouldn't sell it in tubs, tubes and barrels, etc
