Shout out to The Beach. Great book I'd forgot all about until they parodied at the end. For those that don't know it's about a secret mythical beach that is like a travellers heaven cut off from the rest of the world but you can only find the island with a map.

The Beach - if you can find it Leo;) After that film was made, and the damage they caused to that island, no-one was allowed on it again. At least I saw it from the boat I was on when diving around there, off the coast of Phuket. I met lots of backpackers in Thailand just like these guys:) I was living in Japan at the time, so it was only a few hours by plane to Thailand, great to spend a week there.

Pretty sure the sketch is making fun of ‘hardcore travelers’ using the juxtaposition of those types in a familiar setting. It isn’t suggesting that they’d be cool if they were in Varanasi, but showing how ridiculous their attitudes and behaviors are.
