The history of Mitsubishi in Australia can be traced back to the 1960s, although the company only became a brand here in its own right after buying out Chrysler and the American corporation’s local manufacturing facilities. The locally developed Magna, a widened model based on the Japanese front-wheel drive Galant, won numerous awards for its advanced but practical design. Unfortunately for Mitsubishi’s Aussie manufacturing efforts, small export programs and a domestic market that resisted the allure of a front-wheel drive passenger car in favour of well established rear-wheel drive rivals from Ford and GM-H. Mitsubishi closed its Tonsley Park facility in South Australia in 2008, but has succeed in the years since as a full-line importer, primarily selling SUVs and the Triton LCV.
