Learn something new everyday...the only VCR`s I ever encountered that had that little "pinwheel" spinner on top of the tape drive area were made by JVC.

That was the "impedance roller idler" meant to smooth out the imperfections of the supply tape to make sure the video cylinder had the best tension possible without fluctuation. only the mostly high end units had it.

I just resurrected my old Mitsubishi HS-U760 only to find it would no longer play. I stumbled across your excellent presentation on replace the drive belt, so I opened up the recorder and found that the reel belt had completely disintegrated and was laying on the circuit board. The drive belt had been replaced a few years ago and was in great shape. I am now in the hunt for a new belt, but not knowing the exact size, I wrapped some string around the pully wheels, then measured the length of the string, 11.6". Maybe you could confirm the belt size for me? The major problem now is, where to find a replacement belt? Any idea on where I could order a replacement belt?

Every nineties Mitsubishi I had the PSU caps always leaked everywhere, and it was always a lot of leakage probably down to the supplier of the caps they were using (or possibly their own). I have to say, their early-to-mid eighties decks were bomb-proof in comparison (as were their TV's). Years ago I had OEM versions of the HS330 (front-loading), and an older '5-motor' top-loading design. They were versions made exclusively by Mitsubishi for Scandinavian electronics manufacturer, Salora (Finland) and thus styled a little differently, but I digress. Anyway, nice work as always! :-)

In my opinion their direct view and projection TV's had a way worse cap leakage problem.

I just tried to fire up my old HS-U760 that still looks new. Nothing, other than it's drawing 9 watts. Won't power on, nothing on display at all, tried disabling the child lock even though the display is blank. Nothing works yet it's drawing 9 watts. Took it apart and the belts are toast but everything else looks good, no bulging capacitors, both fuses are good. Any ideas?

Too bad, old skewl stuff was better to a point compared to the new stuff of today. I expect nothing more than a pro on this Channel than quality work. Wish you lived closer to me. I'm in Upstate NY and still running a 80's Adcom GFA-555 that seems to be working fine, however, I'm sure it should be re-capped. It has Darlington Output Transistors. Probably cost me $100.00 just to get it to you. We'll see. I think it should be gone through by now. Not sure if Nelson Pass is still alive now, but he was a great amp designer of the day. I think he moved on from Emerson Electric to found Pass Audio. Which is I guess is High End Audio.

Great video, one can clearly see each step 👍 The last time I turned on my JVC S-VHS recorder, everything was fine. I inserted a tape and pressed play. Then the display started fading off and there was very soft sish-sound. After that everything was dark and it never turns on again. Is that something to do with capacitor? What should I look at? any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Probably high ESR caps that the power supply couldn't handle. Most likely self destructed the power supply.

@@norcal715 Thanks for the response. That sounds a big thing. Then I should better look at my Siemens S-VHS recorder which seems to have belt issue "only". I only want to get my S-tapes digitalized. I think it was the Mitsubishi brand VCR's that had the cracked capstan pulley. I'd seen a few and they were replaced with metal.

I've come across several K-Mech Panasonic VCR's from the early '90s with loading motors that used a flimsy plastic bushing for the worm-gear (didn't use or require a belt) which often cracked and slipped on the shaft, causing the carriage to become stuck halfway when eject was pressed. It was not possible to simply glue this bushing to the shaft and wasn't reliable so a new motor with bushing pre-fitted had to be ordered and replaced. Once done, the VCR's would perform properly. After Panasonic released the Z-Mech series, most of those headaches disappeared.

I replaced the drive belt and pinch roller on my hs-u80 today. I could not figure out how to swap the two small belts. The old drive belt was in many gooey pieces. After screwing everything but the top cover back on, now it won't accept a tape... push in manually and it stops. Power on briefly shows tape timer then immediately hides tape timer. Revisited all the work and still don't see what went wrong. Prior to starting the belt replacement, tape loaded into transport fine. Ideas?

I bought an assortment and put them in… but when tensioning the wheel on the left before putting the motor back in, it clicked and locked in place. I’m also worried I may have moved the gears just above it and messed with the timing.

what is your method to determine the size of a missing belt when it is completely melted out ? I personally use a loop of string, but that's annoying .
@josem.martinez856

You can refer to the part list section on the service manual and see if there's any info on there regarding the belt size. Another good trick is to cut a long rubber band and wrap it around the belt path. Measure the length and look for a slightly shorter belt (around 5% shorter).
