The pop up HUD glass is a money saving feature. Newer Mazda’s use a similar type HUD system. The reason is because to project HUD info on the windshield, there has to be a special laminated windshield with a tapered middle lamination layer to prevent the projection from being a double image in the 2 glass layers in the windshield. That makes the windshield cost much more than a normal laminated windshield. Having the separate pop-up piece means they can still use a regular laminated windshield without the double projection image.

Of course it's not a sports or rally car, but EVERYONE is getting out of the "car" business for these little crossovers, so you can't blame Mitsubishi. A couple of months ago, I went test driving ... Rav4 has the soul of a minivan, CR-V came with it's own soccer ball (for all the moms who will be driving it), the Hyundai rattled like an old shopping cart. The Eclipse Cross felt fun to drive ... that's why I bought one.

If the S-AWC is basically the same as mine, it's no surprise it handled the curves well; at least in mine it's a torque-vectoring front diff and brake based vectoring in the rear. I've easily kept up with people in overpriced German sedans on twisty roads, and it was a blast to drive in California's Sierra Nevadas. The only thing that kills the Cross... seriously... is the Nissan Jatco CVT it came with. Otherwise, the block is an aluminum sleeved version of the 4G15 in the Colt Ralliart or CZT. Someone still has to determine whether something can be done with these heads (since they were clearly the subject of cost-cutting: DI and integrated exhaust manifold, fist-sized IHI econo-turbo.) AYC in this one is brake and speed sensor (slip) activated (Subaru, anyone?), compared to the Evo's, which trips on with the mix of acceleration and G-sensor signals. But still not bad, overall. Torque-vectoring in an SUV for only about US$1 to 2k more than a FWD? Why not? If Mitsu just renewed their contract with Getrag and dropped the DCT-450 SST in this one, I would say your comment, Sarah, on this being the way Mitsubishi finds its way back to true performance roots, would be more accurate. But alas - you can't do much to the car. Thanks to that shitbox CVT, no one in their right mind would be sane to even consider doing the mildest of mods to it.
