Thanks for giving this a try. Even though square foot gardening is popular it is a crap shoot as far as your plants getting all the nutrients they need. You have no idea what minerals or nutrients are in or are not in the compost and mulch you use. This way you know exactly what your plants are getting. I think you will find you will have much more success with the Mittleider method.

It was actually designed to do just that. The snow slips right off the plastic because of the 45% angle. If it is sticky/wet snow it might stick. I have seen photos of snow 1' high on top. It'll hold it.

I really like how cost conscious you are with your projects and how well they look. I frequently find myself looking at your constructs and thinking to myself "that probably costs an arm and a leg". Fortunately for me you are excellent at what you do and when I click on the links you so graciously provide I am always amazed at just how affordable everything is. I too am in the Houston area and I'm so glad there is someone like you from my neck of the woods sharing your knowledge and learning experiences.

With the pipe bent it easily slides in and out of the support pipe and does not push against the support pipe. We have used 1/2" CPVC pipe in my wife's garden because that is very flexible. Because of the outward pressure of the bent over CPVC you have to put the ends inside of the box, use rebar in the ground so the pipe can slip over it or some other way to support it. Both ways work. This is the Mittleider method of doing it.

I found out that the best way to bend a PVC pipe is to put some sand on the stove heat it up then put it inside the pipe. Then easily bend it. Just thought I would share. Thank you :)

*EVERYONE* *PLEASE!* Make DARN SURE you don't overheat and burn any PVC, NOT EVER NEVER NEVER. I would only even consider heating PVC outside and I'm such a safety fanatic, I'd want a gentle breeze wafting to take away everything! The dioxins that are released by PVC outgassing from heating are the fastest road to cancer on the planet. That said, this is a WONDERFUL DESIGN, and one that I will act on (just outdoors!). FYI, if anywhere you ever are has PVC and there is a fire, get the heck out of there and change counties until the fire department puts the thing out: "When produced or burned, PVC plastic releases dioxins, a group of the most potent synthetic chemicals ever tested, which can cause cancer (dioxin is the most potent carcinogen known to science) and harm the immune and reproductive systems. ... PVC products also release toxic fumes if they catch fire."

Ok 'stupid question' here hehehehe. Can you not 'just use' a thinner PVC pipe and run them so they simply form an arch? I ask because I am a single mom of 3 and disabled veteran...so money is always tight for 1 thing and secondly it seems like it would save time & energy simply by using a thinner PVC pipe to create a simple arch as opposed to the time & tools needed above/beyond to make the bends...thanks!

You do not have to use expensive tubing I have used plain old PVC pipe and pipe strapping both for about 10 dollars. You can also buy the white pipe they use for hot water $3.79 for a 10 foot lenght "Canadian money" and pipe strap the plastic bends and keeps it's shape all this bending and jigs is a waste of time and effort you don't need to do this .Use your imagination there are tons of examples on these sites of greenhouses plastic covering use a plastic drop cloth if in a sheltered location

What are your thoughts as far as sustainability go, being that you have to buy and make the fertilizer. Is the answer to just buy in bulk (I mean BULK) and make as you need it? The best bet is to paint it. If you want to be really sure use a metallic paint like spray aluminum. Metallic paints block a 100% of light and will give total protection. Once you lay down the metallic you can paint it over with anything including house paint but it will tend to flake off so I'd stick to spray paint. I'd also use some spray primer first to make it more durable.

I live in Phoenix where the sun gets things up to about 210 degrees in the shade. Have gotten any feed back on protection from the sun under those conditions? Do you need to paint the plastic to give shading or no? Or would you use some kind of shade cloth for the summer.
@jaykneegarner2479

Justin Case Its a little late but this answer could help someone else so I will give it a go! Use shade cloth during the summer and plastic or other barrier during winter. That is unless you want to cook your veggies, LOL! Don't forget to cut vent holes during winter or your plants could suffocate.

In the medical field we were always told zinc deficiency causes gray hair. And I would not want lumber treated with arsenic but copper repels slugs so I wouldn't want treated if I were growing vegetables. that is also why you do not use it inside your home or burn it in a fire.
