I saw Mitzi Gaynor's stage show in person back in the late 1970s, and man was she HOT!!! There was not a sexier woman on t.v. and movies back then than Mitzi Gaynor! I loved Joey Heatherton too, but even she had to take a back seat to Mitzi in her prime. As late actor Ray Walston once said: "Mitzi brings out an animal magnetism in him like no other woman can."

You're right, it was "4 letter words". I can only assume that "standards and practices" in Hollywood found that "4 letter words" was too much for the ladies in Ohio to hear at the matinee in 1956. Fight censorship! LOL

They changed the original thirties lyrics ("four-letter words"), which implied cusswords and was too suggestive for the repressive fifties. The "three-letter words" reference was an attempt I think, to change the meaning from "cuss words" to simplistic, or stupid words. It's weird that the earlier twenties and thirties were in so many ways more progressive than the later decade of the fifties.

I really cannot understand why Mitzi Gaynor was not the biggest star in Hollywood, she had everything, she could sing, dance (equal tp ANY of the stars of that era) she could act, and on top of all that she was absolutely stunningly beautiful, she has been my all time favourite for seventy years, and I still , at the age of 86, watch her films on the web. She is my absolute favourite of all the stars.....and there were PLENTY of stars way back then. They will never be able to better those stars with the current obsession with CGI

@@warnegoodman Sorry Warne, but I have to disagree with your assessment on the singing of Mitzi Gaynor. I worked for the largest privately owned clothing company in the USA. I was NY based, but when she was appearing at the top spot in Vegas I rang to book a table for her show......The waiting list was SIX months, only Sinatra had a longer waiting list at that time. So to say that her singing was weak means either you have never seen (or heard) her live shows, or you are tone deaf.

Mitzi Gaynor came into the limelight in the early 50's. In films, she was first spotted in the Betty Grable-Dan Dailey starrer "My Blue Heaven". I vaguely recall that she played Betty's understudy and flirted outrageously with Dan, which causes a crack in their marriage. Yes, Mitzi was cute with her pug nose and petite form. But, she was first and foremost a fantastic dancer with lovely legs and calves that showcased her terpsichorean prowess. 20th Century Fox, under which studio she was a contract player went into publicity overdrive by planting all Mitzi's high-kicking poses in movie magazines. This helped as even those who didn't have the time to go to the movies still got to know who Mitzi Gaynor was. She was wise in that she obeyed studio protocol and played even in a Western: 3 for Texas. But, the studio realized that dancing was her forte and gave her a string of starring roles in musicals. She displayed her dramatic flair in "The Joker is wild" with Frank Sinatra and won the audience's sympathy for her loyalty to a bum, who gave her nothing but heartache. A high spot in her career was the stage hit "South Pacific"; another great outing was 'Les Girls" with Gene Kelly where she captivated audiences with her exquisite dancing. Yes, Mitzi Gaynor, was greatly loved by audiences back in the 50's and 60's and its great to know she is still going strong.
