This is a typical goods train running along the line from Oxford to London. The Railways were designated as common carriers and were obliged to transport any item required by their customers.
The train illustrates some of the wide variety of products that they carried and is pulled by a 2600 Class engine known as ‘Aberdare’ class, which were built between1900 and1907.
These locomotives were William Dean’s last design of freight engines and this particular one - No. 2616 - entered service in 1903 and is seen here after it had received a new boiler.
