it’s not that it’s _hard_. it’s that everyone’s skin tones are different so it’s hard to make for everybody, and the resources limit just how many they can make. now, if they sold something like this where people can make their own foundation shade, that’d probably go really well.

@@chrystalneveah4666 the problem is that huge brands up until the past decade didn’t even have dark foundation shades. and a lot of smaller brands only do white or slightly tan shades. there is no reason why there should be a default skin color to make. if u can’t afford to have at least a few different poc shades and only have white shades, then u aren’t ready to start your company. they’ll have 30 white shades w 5 poc shades. “resources” isn’t the problem here.

As a makeup noob, a video like this suggests the best way to make foundation for every skin tone would be just selling the base colours for people to combine to match their skin. The colours sold separately and in a variety of sizes, since different skin tones would need different proportions and it would be a bad idea to make everyone get the same size of every colour, then have a website or fact sheet that helped you work out the ratios for the colours, and then addition tips of what colour to add to adjust it a certain way. To my makeup noob brain, that seems like a pretty good idea. The only negative I could see would be the inconvenience of having to mix it yourself and keeping track of how much of each colour was added so you can recreate it next time. Materials and pricing would also be an issue, because instead of a customer buying one bottle, they would have to buy 5, so either each bottle would, on average, be 1/5 the size of an average foundation bottle or the customer has to buy 5 times the amount of stuff they would normally buy.

There should be a foundation kit released that comes with pumps of yellow, white, black, blue, and red. A chart that shows how many pumps are needed for a general shade range, and then instructions on how to colour correct the premade colours to your specific skin. Like yes, companies should just make more shades. No, it’s not that hard. But I think it’s be a cool idea to be able to mix your own shades- and then for people who have more dramatic shifts in skin tone in different seasons, they don’t have to buy multiple foundations. It’s also be a good idea to sell the colours individually and in a kit that comes with all of them. That way people who will run out of certain colours before others don’t have to rebuy every colour every time. Face paint is, ok? But water based paint cracks easily, and oil based/grease paint stays sticky and gets messy quickly.

Actually wouldn't need the black. You can basically create black with red, yellow and blue paint as it is. When I did a studio art class for a year in uni, we were only allowed to have one red, yellow and blue in a specific shade, and white. That's it. Just four paints. We had a project where we had to paint a colour still life picture, and then do the same thing, but in greyscale, but with the blacks we created. It was a good way to see if we mixed too much of any of the colours into them, because you could tell once white was added into them.

@Unreasonably Random Thats what I was taught in art class, yes. It all depends on the proportions tho. The idea is that equal parts yellow, blue, and red will make a neutral brown. But most people would use equal parts orange and blue. Which actually means half blue, a quarter red and a quarter yellow. I've found in my own art that blue seems so much more pigmented than the other two and has to be used sparingly so that it doesn't overwhelm the whole mix

See the yellow and purple combination already has red in it because blue and red makes purple. The same goes with the blue and orange. Orange has red and yellow in it. So the only thing it does is speed up the process. There was a makeup brand called PRESCRIPTIVES -they specialized in mixing up the colors for customizing your foundation. They started with these colors for every single person that stepped up to the counter then depending upon your undertone, they added any more of whatever color you I needed. The science was fascinating! When they did me they started with red and yellow and I kept insisting that they put in red but they did slide a little bit of the blue in there and then I realized that they were making the brown with my red. When we were choosing colors they were insisting that I could colors like yellow. now I know that more towards the center of my face has a more warm and yellow undertone. They were right.

As an artist, I'm so impressed. I've always thought skin tones are really difficult to mix. Until about 1/2 way through I was sure you'd never get it. But I think you're ready for portrait painting.

Clinique was the first cosmetic company in the 70's that I can remember that came out with a liquid green mask primer that dried before applying your liquid foundation. It was made to wear underneath your makeup to lighten your skin, and get rid of redness.

Some tips from a painter :) Complimentary colours mixed together make brown, (red and green for example), so I would mix blue and yellow by themselves to get green and then add however much red you need to get brown. For your skin tone I would probably use a little more yellow when you mix the green and add white at the end - you could also do this for white skin and use a lot more white at the end depending on your undertones.

That's still all three primary colors though... I get what you're saying and the message you are putting out there, but it's still all primary colors no matter how you do it. Idek if I'm getting what I'm trying to say across anymore😅
@beckarose7424

@@Yvonne-Bella They never said it wasn't primary colors? They were talking about amounts of which colors to mix. Complimentary colors means like opposite/contrasting colors on the typical color wheel. Not trying to be mean but I don't see how you understood the message or what they were putting out there when it sounds like you didn't understand their comment at all so I wanted to explain lol..

Once upon a time, large department stores would mix up your powder in front of you. 1940s and 50s. They would measure out pinks, peaches, whites, blues and greens in the correct amount for your desired look.

@@drkrishnap it's cost and convenience. To train and hire talented staff to do this costs money. And it's simple to snatch a premade formula from any number of nonspecialist stores in a pinch. This is the tradeoff.

@@louisadale5907 what training? Have you seen the lipstick mixer thingy? Have you seen color cards? Just hold against your skin. There will be a machine. Just need a chart with the number of presses needed from each color. Test it by applying. Regular staff will do. Then you can select your brand, and volume, and place the order.

The biggest art tip I can give you is to look at the color wheel. Use complementary colors to change a color's hue. For example: if it’s too green, add red; if it’s too blue, add orange, and so on. I would not recommend using white or black to change its value. Instead, use a complementary color as explained above for a more saturated look. Then, go in with white/black to mute the color if needed. You also want to use your undertones to get a better outcome. Your skin isn’t just one color. So adding a small amount of blue, green, or purple will make color matching much easier. If you want to know what your undertones are, look at the veins on your wrist. Hope this helps

What are the veins on my wrist showing me? I’m like a caramel complexion but I’m sure the inside of my wrist is way lighter than my face. I’m black so when I say caramel I truly mean that not tan.

mine are teal (greenish blue/blueish green) @@TwistedRootsMelody I'm mixed race and middle aged, so I used to have to make my own foundation by mixing foundation with colour corrector, loose eye shadow and/or Halloween/Clown' cream pots. Thankfully I had good skin, so most of the time, moisturizer mixed with a little bronzer or gold shimmer was enough, but now that I NEED foundation to look like a living human, I am so thankful at the evolution of diversity at the makeup counter. Also, I love how diy make-up has become mainstream. So much creativity and confidence in these young folks. I loooove it!!!!
