Hi! I have a question Graham; I know that you’re either using a desktop PC or a laptop PC for your editing and recording, but I’m using my iPad. I’m currently using my iPad with a BM-800 condenser mic, and a V8 audio interface/soundcard. Recently! I’d discovered that my iPad-while using GarageBand-seems to pick up on the audio input from my Colby on-ear headphones, and my iPads built-in mic, and not registering the audio preamp from my V8 soundcard or BM-800 condenser mic! Is there anyway I can fix this?

8:34 EQ - First Plugin 9:31 1st Compressor - 2nd Plugin (3-6 db gain reduction) 9:51 2nd Compressor - 3rd Plugin (3-6 db gain reduction) 12:30 Summary My opinion and workfow: EQ>Vocal Rider>Compressor If the lead vocal needs it, then add Parallel SideChain Compression, then compress the sum again for taste. That'll give you a rich and "expensive" sound.

Here's a tip for YOU Graham, since I've gotten so many from you. On the vocal double, use a transient plugin to reduce the transients of the hard syllables so only those of the lead vocal can be heard so you don't get any k, t, p "flams" but still get the fullness of the double.
@fairweatherfriends.

I'm no audio guy, I'm a graphic designer, but there are two things I borrowed from Isaac Asimov. 1st: Whenever a feel like lacking in creativity, I go work on another project for a while (I'm struggling with a logo? I'll draw cartoon; I'm struggling with an Illustration? I'll sketch a typography), even if it is just for an hour. It helps my brain focus on a new task, think in a different kind of problem to solve, from a different point of view, then it refreshes. 2nd: Even when absolutely lacking any ideas, If I don't have time to go for other projects, I just go on and start sketching and trying ideas, even if those are random, unrelated, or simply stupid. Getting those ideas out let you judge them and try finding better solutions from a tachnical point of view. Suddenly some dull, yet decent, ideas come up, and from those, many times I've have found my way to some awesome work. Just don't allow yourself to get blocked.

i love this method been using it for a while although i go several steps further, sometimes my volca chain looks rediciously BUt i have an EQ then a compressor, then another EQ compressor. If the vocalist is particularly Essy i will have 2 dessers, remember compressors can enhance sss in vocalists so it may be nessesary to de-ess before and/or after compression. you can even use 2 de-essers to take care of differnt ranges. its nice though when you can go from start to radio ready though in minimal plugins

Question if I compress going into the box [ vocals] let's say 2db how much should I compress with plugins, and what should the overall total be 1db per compressor including the external?
@zachary963
4 жыл бұрын
Eric .Melton you should compress it so it sits well in the mix, and in a style that’s appropriate. I realize how dumb that sounds, but I’ve used 10:1 and took off 7-10 db with one compressor. Other times, I’ve used 2 compressors in a row, with 2:1 and taking maybe 3 db each. It just depends on what you’re going for. The heavy compression works super great for extremely dynamic tracks, like hard rock, or for getting the voice right in your face, like in pop. The softer compression, on the other hand, gently polishes the vox and works great for more intimate tracks where the vocal doesn’t need to up in your face.

It has something to do with not wanting to over-compress. I think when you add one heavy compressor, you can lose the life in the vocals a lot of times, but by slowly dialing in compression the vocals are boosted and smoothed without going overboard. The whole philosophy of "less can do more."

Actually, he blamed the unwanted frequencies on the recording environment, (as in, "probably recorded in a closet or small room") ...he said the vocals sounded "muffled,' and that the mic was "overloading" ... none of which were attacks on the vocalist himself. Graham is usually polite, and careful with criticisms. He puts the "mixing" craft on display without attacking people... Frankly, I don't see where you're getting this "clearly destroys this man" thing from. It almost seems like you're talking about some other video!

Compressors I've always used to REDUCE the overall harshness of my vocals but NEVER to make my vocals sound more harsh. Like another guy said, you should have a de-esser plugin for these vocals 100%. What you did with your EQ7 is very similar to what I do, I just feel like you're not compressing the vocals or using the compressors properly. Either that, or I've been doing it wrong for 15+ years. Even if that were the case, my vocals never sound as harsh as yours did. 🤘

The song itself and the overall tone of it, sounds terrible, very amateur. A bad example of Grahams favorite genre, the only damn genre we ever hear from him quite frankly, and to be honest I'm tired of hearing it. Try doing some EDM, and show us how good you really are, or is EDM beyond you? Are you stuck away in your own little world of the same ole boring 4/4 Rock? And the vocal in this song sounds bad before and after. Ditch the whole song, it's irretreivable.
