I truly think Okada always wanted to show off his goofy side and his chops as a heel, but NJPW needed him to be the super-serious babyface champion for so many years because he was their top draw. Look at the funny road trip videos the CHAOS stable would do (Okada always looked like he was having the time of his life just being silly with his friends), his BTE appearances (and how he always steals Nick Jackson's gear), his "spiraling fallen star" gimmick when he dyed his hair and walked around with balloons, and his feud with Kaito Kiyomiya where he came across like an uber heel

Idk, I feel like it's pretty obvious why people feel like it's too long. It literally takes half the show. The order doesn't help either where you get this really long match, so others feel like they've been shortened, even if they're technically normal lengths. And just a personal thing with MJF for me, he's still mostly getting cheered. He got cheered on his turn, and of course he's getting cheered because of doing matches like these, but *for me* it makes MJF as a heel feel less than. He isn't making people boo him for more than a few spots, so it feels like... why is he a heel? The answer is story reasons but like... idk. It has this dissonance for me where it reflects the dissonance of Swerve during the Hangman feud. Where Swerve was being cheered because the audience likes him, and MJF is still mostly getting cheered because the audience likes him and he does cool things.
