The rear body mounts can be removed and then the body can be jacked up .then the bolts are easily accessible. Smarter not harder.

I feel your pain bro, done this twice to my ML270. Spent days the first time doing, then covered the 3 nuts in grease before I put the dust cap back on, that helped a bit the second time. Can't forgive MB for not putting some service hatches in the trunk for this job. Would have made it soooooo much easier, both for diy and dealerships!

I think I found some access above once I did it from below... Not fun. Days wasted on this and the truck got sold anyway.

Never Sell your W163. Also get all your parts and I mean ALL Parts at the Salvage yard. I had a broken rear spring Right side. It was a pain to get off. I sprayed it twice a day for 3 days first and still had to use a torch to heat it. I ended up burning myself even with a glove on lol haha. I got a “new” spring for $12 at salvage yard. Good Luck my friend...

I am so depressed I sold it. I only had it for working in Rhode Island for two years. But I really got to like it. Drank gas. Rusty. But a great truck. Engine bullet proof. Transmission was so so but was going strong. $2900 sold Dec 13 2019. A very sad day. It was $1,300 to ship it back to California and I was not going to drive it.

wd40 is more of lubricant then penetrating oil. use pb blaster or wd40 with label saying penetrating oil on it. use proper tool as well and that will help. love my w163 and they are gems and very understated suv

took me 3 hours to get the whole drivers side off and back on, i just used a 13mm wrench and hammer/pry bar to get leverage and torque. it can be done without removing the tire and wheel well

For ever. Made no difference to me. The Mass. Inspection requirements made me replace it to get a safety sticker on the windshield certifying the ML500 safe to drive. Did not make any noises no driving issues with the broken spring at all. PAINFUL to replace. Horrible really.

I bet all your three bolts holding on the shock tower were reachable. Or you came down from above. I had a petrol tank in the way too. Mate you got off easy. And I am happy for you. This was a waste of 3 days of my life.

Yeah. Wow. I put $10,000 total cost into this truck - insurance, repairs and $500 for the truck. Sold it for $2,900. Miss it as I put a lot of work into it. But yes you are right. Rusty and probably getting worse. I did grind off the wheel wells and paint with rust prohibiting paint and then some paint on top. A hack yes but needed to stop rust. Oh well. Truck is gone. I did a carfax and the guy who bought it still has it!

Guy it’s 4th of July not Thanksgiving. The ratchet wrench is the tool. Yes but Please don’t chisel the shock tower and springs. Wd40 no good. And soak the hell out it with Coca Cola (serious) go back out there tomorrow use the ratchet wrench but promise no more Harbor Freight. Take the pressure off the shock by using a jack, helps a lot because at this rate you will be finished by Thanksgiving. You already have the part just bring to a person who does it everyday. Preferably a mechanic. One hour tops. Go enjoy the fireworks and have a drink. It’s hot out. Save some coca cola

Yes it was the 4th of July. If you are out in 95 degree heat for three days dealing with this wellllll what can I say? I did get it out and the new one back in finally. Due to RUST from the North East this added a lot of time . fighting rust. I had to use my legs kicking a stump to get the bolts out of the lower arms in the driveway. Truck sold Dec 13th 2019 to some lucky guy in Rhode Island Miss the damn thing as about 20 DAYS of my life wasted fixing the damn thing Next truck will be a 2006 or 2007 ML500 with the M113 V8 I think. Or even a 2005 again> Time will tell. The 2005 was super comfortable and high up.

@@moviestudioland I’ve owned both W164 ML500 and Then W163 ML500. I feel the W163 is a better truck. Definitely more Robust. Easier to work on. Oh I live in PA and my W163 was a total rust bucket. I thought it was a flood car at one point till I learned they all rust like hell.
