Im a born and raised diehard Astros fan but something about the Cardinals of '82 and '85 I loved. It was all the players collectively as one team. I remember all those guys. As well as Whitey. So much talent and camaraderie. Of course I pulled for them in both World Series. The Astros werent contenders at that time. Brings back good memories nonetheless.

It came down to team health. I’m sure the Cardinals had some injury issues, too, but the last two American League Cy Young Award winners, both on the Brewers, were virtually non factors because of injury. Rollie Fingers (the 1981 American League MVP and Cy Young Award winner) didn’t play in the series after saving 29 games for the Brewers during the regular season. He missed the entire 1983 season, too. And Pete Vukovich clearly wasn’t himself. He started two games in the Series, but gave up 7 earned runs in 14 innings, pitching while in great pain. It was discovered in the off-season that he’d torn his rotator cuff. He made three starts at the very end of the 1983 season, then missed all of 1984 with injury. Had the Brewers had Fingers, and a healthy Pete Vukovich, they win the Series.

Few thoughts: 1. The core of this Cardinal team should easily have 3 world series rings and be remembered historically- it is but not 3 WS worth. 2. Paul Molitor had the fastest hands through the strike zone I have ever seen- a truly under appreciated legend. 3. The Brewers manager out chewed Whitey- a feat possibly harder than the WS title.

@@darioseventi4091 For the Cardinals, the trade was indirectly helpful, in that the sequence allowed them to move an unhappy Gary Templeton yet replace him with an even better defender in Ozzie. Then 16 years later in 1998 after the Brewers joined the national league, McGee was back with the Cardinals, and was beating up on us again during a season game at county stadium. The Brewer fans were booing every time McGee stepped up to the plate. And the announcers said "These Brewer fans have LONG memories!!"

@@aboxofbroken8tracks983, I didn't think it was bad. Quirky moments, yeah, but the lopsided victories in Game 1 and Game 6 took away from the excitement of a tight game.

Hell, I wish I knew. I've heard it in a movie called "Pumpkin," in Dave Volsky's great collection of NFL Films music (I posted it on Facebook once, then never saw it again), AND I have it on a dance compilation CD, but NOWHERE have I ever been able to find the title! It drives me nuts!

Great news, Lennin! With the help of SoundHound, I have solved the mystery, and the tune is "Prestige Production," by Neil Richardson (KPM Music).

Another title for this track is the Riviera Affair. It plays at the beginning of the Ocean’s 13 movie.

The average age of major league players probably doesn't fluctuate much but these guys look much older than today's players.

Awful "highlights"--no play by play and lots of pictures of fans making sad faces when the other team got a hit.
