The problem with some of these calls is that you can only tell that pitch is a strike or a ball because of that box on your tv screen? So can you really blame the ump for missing a call that's off by an inch, especially when the catcher sells the pitch?

Being an ump is a hard job but going by the book that TV strike zone looks pretty accurate and all balls and strikes should be reasonably around the box. Being off by 6" in any given direction is too much The rule book even has a pretty picture to go to the definition. "The STRIKE ZONE is that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the hollow beneath the kneecap. The Strike Zone shall be determined from the batter’s stance as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball. (For diagram of STRIKE ZONE, see Appendix 5.)"

You know what... Are a lot of these calls bad? Yes. Are a lot of them close enough that without a computer catching it that there would be less complaining? Yes. The bigger issue I see, aside from the blatant missed calls that happen, is the readyness of players and coaches to fuss, cuss, throw things, and generally lose their cool over a single call. When umpires were treated like gentlemen, and they treated the players/coaches like gentlemen, you saw a lot fewer ejections, and a lot fewer umpires ready to eject everyone. At 80-90 mph, the ball coming straight at you has less than a second to be called a ball or strike. My opinion is that even if it is not the "armpit to knee" zone, if it is pretty much consistent and fair, go with it. Then, if you have an issue, be a man about it, not throwing a tantrum.
@billbowers4673

You sound like an umpire. The problem is, there is no accountability for the umpires now because their union is too strong. This is why umpires the likes of Joe West and Angel Hernandez were/are allowed to continue ruining the game. It's a beautiful game if you let the players decide it. The best games I ever watched were the ones where I had no idea who the umpire was. The problem is, now they want to be part of the game.

If an umpire can throw a player out of the game for what he considers a marginal infraction of decorum, then why can’t a team manager have an umpire tossed for making obviously verifiable bad calls. Seems to me that the umps are depriving the teams of a player that cost a lot of money and they are posturing more as judges than umpires. I think that would only be fair to let the managers have a little authority. Kind of balance things out. This is exactly why I refuse to attend or even watch a pro baseball game. The umps make it NOT FUN.

In the sport I watch most, football or soccer to the American readers, if a Referee has a great game then you don’t even notice them, they keep the game fair and call it correctly. It seems to me that you’ve got quite the collection of Umpires who a) actually want to be noticed and b) they can’t resist making calls that satisfy point a. The sport is too reliant on these men with egos who love to throw players out and who HAVE to do something that will make it onto the sports news headlines. They don’t appear to want a clean, fair game that’s won by the best team.
